I have a 01 ex cab 4.7 5 speed, homemade intake, catback and autolite plugs, I think that my truck is slow. I live at +6000 feet and it seems like my truck is weak. I am always in 4th gear on the highway! any one live at around 6000 feet with the same problems? I also went to utah and got aroung 12 mpg! not fun at all, thanks

Could be the altitude. The MPG depends on how much of a lead foot you have. Maybe your injectors are dirty? I dunno. My 4.7 auto feels powerful. I'm in PA, I dunno what my altitude is here. Get a supercharger. It'll solve the power problem, haha.

My RC 4x4 gets 15 mpg without even trying, so it seems you could have a problem. Some were programmed with more spark advance than others, which would affect performance; not sure if that would affect milage to the extent yours seems to be off though.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

High altitude KILLS power.

But mine still has PLENTY when I get to 6K ft. But down here in the valley at 1K it feels like you threw a blower on it to compare.

Wyo mopar, last week I went from Las Vegas, NV to Wisconsin via Wyoming (I-80) and averaged 19.5 MPG on my 4.7 CC 2wd auto. I have the homebrew air tube, relocated AIT sensor and repositioned TPS, everything else is stock except that I am running all synthetic fluids.

A month ago I went to Utah on vacation pulling a 3000# trailer and averaged 11 MPG towing through the mountains.

12 MPG sounds real bad unless your loading down the truck.

Weak Spark maybe? I know that 6k is going to damper your performance but is the air really that thin up there that it could make that drastic of a difference?

New Air filter, injector cleaner, different gas station, and lighter on your foot when cruising and let us know what happens.

I had bought cheap gas from a station couldn't even peal from a stop, went back to Sunoco 87 oct and started laying rubber the same day.

Yeah. I lose soem power when I go up to Flagstaff, etc. But it still has power. And gas mileage doesn't really go down.
I also average 11 to 12 MPG pulling a trailer that weighs at least 3000 Lbs.
Weird man.
Know what's funny. My truck will peel out silly with the trailer attached. This 4.7 has always been peppy off the line. My bro in law has the 5.2 in his Dodge Ram. His lags. Then runs out by 5K as well.
The 4.7 jerks from a stop and revs all the way to 6K. And since I've put some miles on my truck since the cam swap and me porting mt TB I think it's shifting different. It MUST have more power at 6k or so cuz it shifts hard and quick enough to really feel it with this 5-45FRE. No torque management mod either, got the 2003 with the TCM built into the PCM. Maybe it takes a while for the PCM to learn after osme mods. Because at first I didn't notice much wt all with the cams and TB.

You need to take that thing in to someplace and have it checked out, it's sick. I live above 6,000' also (Colorado Springs) and have no more problem with power than my neighbors, and I get 17 mpg city and 22+ mpg highway.

Pull your Spark Plugs and examine them first. I over gaped Champions .045 and instead of tunning up my 99 318 It actually tuned-down. Gas milage droped to 13mph. The enging lost power at low rpms and at stop lights it would stubble (enigne bounced while in gear foot on break) At higher rpm she sreemed just fine. Tried all kinds of crap. Washed K&N, changed AIM, Cleaned TBC. Then pulled the plugs and droped in 5224 autolites gaped to .040. Sweet and cheap fix. Back up to 16 MPG n the city and Boune is gone.

I actually live in Park City, UT...about 6700 feet. It sucks! I moved from Boston about 3 years ago and that's the first thing I noticed. I can't even get my tires to brake loose out here so I wanted to let the engine breath better and installed a MBRP cat back/dual exit and a 360z cold air intake. I did notice a lot of difference in the top end which is nice coming up the steep canyon from Salt Lake City. However, I rarely drive down there so I really want my low end tourque back. I did post a question relating to this very topic and a guy told me it's Boyle's Law of Gasses in action. For every 1k feet of altitude gain you lose between 1-3% of your power. Really the only way...well, most effective anyways is to supercharge it but I can't exactly afford to drop 4k+ bucks on one. I'm planning on adding high performance cams, intake manifold, PCM once it's available and possibally some headers. Hopefully that'll give me my power back and I can smoke the diesels around here. Which, I notice in this town there are way more diesels than any other truck because the altitude doesn't affect them as much. Everyone here tows either a boat, trailer, or a camper behind them and diesels are the best by far at this altitude.

Going back to gas mileage though...mine is absolute SH*T!! When back east I was averaging 18+ and here I've got as low as 11. Of course here I don't drive on the highway and most of my driving is stop and go in and outta town and then there's the nice sound of my exhaust which makes me drive like an ass sometimes ;)
