Subject: Continued bucking problem

I've posted about this problem before and have gotten some great advice here, although none has seemed to help.

Problem: bucking (feels like a miss on one or more cylinders) at 40 - 50 mph.

So far I've: replaced plugs, PCV, air filter (K&N), TPS, tried different brands and higher grades of gas, tranny serviced by dealer (pan drop/filter change), cleaned the TB, and cleared the PCM.

New info: I truly believe this is a transmission or torque converter problem. It happens immediately after the torque converter locks up and dissipates as I reach higher speeds (55 mph and up). Shifting out of O/D makes no difference, sometimes even makes the bucking more noticeable. After it happens, I can kick the gas a little to unlock the T/C and it smoothes out, but it comes back after it locks up again. The problem happens at least 75% of the time I drive at this speed, although occasionally it runs great.

Has anyone had similar tranny problems? I'm still under warranty, can I get Dodge to go inside the tranny and take care of things? I've read a few posts about valve bodies or various sensors in the tranny, perhaps it's something like this...

I had this problem off the lot with my 01/V8/auto/4x4

Took 20k miles for the dealer to find the problem (yeah, we got a good one here) but it was finally the torque converter.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. Did they have to replace the torque converter, or was it repairable?

Hey Chakara, are you out there?

Do you know how the dealer found out the problem was the torque converter? They ended up replacing my computer and it didn't change a thing. The problem is still there, and now they say none of there technicians can "feel" it. (It's plain as day to me). They've given me the line that if no codes show up then there's no way to diagnose the problem. I'm at my wits end with this problem - I'm going to try a different dealer and if that doesn't work I'll start looking for a manual tranny rig to trade for.

daveo76,

My $ is also on the torque converter. It's going to take a lot of effort to get the dang thing out and relpaced (it's a tranny drop issue). Your better off getting a new one. One word of advice thought, if the parts store sells a remanfactured one (not sure if they do or not) dont get it. For something like this asways buy new. It may even be possible to get an upgraded one.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the advice. I've been thinking about taking it to an automatic tranny shop and seeing if they can diagnose the problem. In addition to 5K more miles on my factory warranty, I've got an aftermarket bumper to bumper that may cover it if so. I've also thought about upgrading to an aftermarket torque converter. Any one out there upgraded a 4.7, auto, 4wd to a better torque converter? Brands to look at?

I also have an 02' QC 4X4 Auto that i feel it buck. I mostly feel it buck sitting at intersections. or when i am barely moving sitting at intersections. I can also feel it bucking at around 45 miles an hour. As this is my first Dodge, I thought this was just typical.

Now that I know its not, time to take to Delaer before Warranty runs out!

my thought was cross fire. on a very dark nite or in a garage. when you cant see your hands in front of your face. start the engine and watch the spark plug wires. if they glow you have cross fire. this is especially important on 5 and 7 since the fire next to each other and run next to each other. there was a chrysler bulletin about this and how to fix it. my van had it and it turned out to be that 5 dollar bosch spark plug was bad. also check your wires..good luck...

Daveo76, Before you take it to have the tranny fixed I may be able to help. I had the exact same problem with my 98 CC 4X4 5.2L. I did a full tune up and disregarded the plug wires, well guess what. I was driving home at 60mph and it kept bucking as usual, and it had gotten much worse over time. I jammed on the gas in frustration and gotta check engine light flash. Autozone read it as a fault in cylinder 7. Replace the plug wires and that was the problem. I thought it was the torque converter too, but my problem was in the engine. ALso, I was never able to get anything on a diagnostic check until the time mentioned above.

I would replace the plug wires if I could... an '02 4.7 has a coil-on-plug ignition system - no plug wires. It may be a problem with one of the individual coils, however. And I've already replace the plugs.

To theduker25: I think we have the same problem. I never posted this, but mine also "chugs" at stoplights if I let off the brake in drive, but little or no gas. It doesn't do it all the time, but I've always thought it was connected with the bucking at higher speeds. Let me know if your dealer finds anything. I've got about 4K left on my warranty.

Mine Bucked at stop lights. 318 CC. Tried everthing. Was worst at cold damp weather and got a little better when it warmed up. Finnaly got out the garden hose and wet down the spark plug wires. They only had 3000 miles on them put two were arching against the exhaust manifold. Put new OEM's back on. Bucking gone and she will spin tires all day.

Sorry for delay. I'm not sure exactally what the dealer did, but I do know it involved them driving on the freeway with a cable somehow attached to the transmission...? Anyway, somehow they could see the torque converter slip.

Good luck!

Do all of you people with this problem have an aftermarket air inlet system? The stock 2002 air inlet box that fits to the throttle body has chambers in it that smooth out the pulses that are present in the engine. I can feel and hear the difference between my home made system and the stock system when I load up the engine going up a hill.
