Subject: Which coil should I use?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a MSD-6A ignition on order. I have my Autolites here. All I need is a coil & wires. Any suggestions. I am looking for the max out of my MPG.

Blaster SS coil seems the way to go with maybe Taylor Spriro or Pro Series wires. Someone help me out here.

Any tips on wiring the ignition. I didn't buy the kit, just the #6200 box.

If you're looking for more mpg, you're looking in the wrong place. If the motor is stock, then stick to the stock replacement coil and wires. MSD stands for Multiple Spark Discharge, so you may pick a little smoother idle or a little better low rpm throttle response. But the MSD box alone won't change mileage any more than a good tune up will.

Well, the truck is modded a bit...not much: K&N, ported/polished 52mm TB, Mopar ECU, etc.

I need a tuneup anyway...so I figured I would go with the good stuff.

The Mopar ECU advances timing and increases the fuel curve, so you may actually pick up some fuel mileage with a better ignition system. Not much, but a little.

I've used Crane's coils on a few vehicles with good results. One of the big problems is finding a good place to mount them. The Crane PS-91 is shaped just like the stock Ford and Dodge part, so it's almost a simple bolt in.

Thanx for that.

I know that you have already bought the MSD computer, but I have had awsome luck with Jacobs systems in the past. I have tried Accel and MSD systems and for mileage you cant beat the Jacobs. The effect is much more noticeable on a poor running engine then a modern computer controled car that is tuned up right.

Chris,

I was really wanting to get the Jacob's system, but after hearing so many problems about reliability, poor customer service, etc....I decided to go with MSD.

What kind of MPG improvements did you get?

Jag,
I have the msd box and crane coil installed on my 98 rc. It was a super easy install and I gained a little mileage. As for wires I used msd's wires. For plugs I only use champs. Also go to napa and get a true brass rotor and cap.

my $.02

Not really ... I have monitors watching the forums that I frequent and the websites where I have banner ads. They inform me when someone has asked an automotive lubrication question and then I follow up with answers or advice.

MOPARornoCAR,

A simple answer ... NO.

Sorry, but I don't know how to answer it any better than that. For the record ... Amsoil has been in business for over thirty (30) years and has never been accused of false advertising, found guilty of false advertising, fined for false advertising, etc. Every other major motor oil company has been either accused, found guilty, fined, or censured by the FTC. I guess we are doing something right!

I know this is a "coil" thread, but I want to answer MOPARornoCAR's question.

The ex-Amsoil guy is wrong. The confusion is that Amsoil does not drill for oil, nor do they refine oil. Amsoil selects the best readily available base oils and additives to formulate a superior synthetic oil ... selecting the base oils and additives from wholesale refiners ... Amsoil is NOT a re-bottled product found at many local stores.

Amsoil is recognized as one of the TOP Synthetic Motor Oils in the World. Amsoil spares no expense when it comes to base oils and additives, selecting the most robust additive packages on the market. These additives keep AMSOIL motor oils shear stable, resist the degrading effects of varnish and sludge, keep engine components clean and deposit-free and effectively resist rust, corrosion and foaming.

Amsoil was First:

--- to develop an API-rated 100 percent synthetic motor oil.
--- to introduce the concept of "extended drain intervals" with a recommended 25,000-mile/1-year drain interval.
--- to produce synthetic motor oils for diesel engines, racing engines, turbo and marine engines.
--- to introduce synthetic oils that legitimately contribute to improving fuel efficiency.
--- to manufacture synthetic gear lube for automotive use.
--- to manufacture a synthetic automatic transmission fluid for automotive use.
__________________________________________________

First, AMSOIL INC. works closely with major additive companies to select the top performing, and usually most expensive, passenger car and heavy duty diesel motor oil additives. These additives have already passed all of the API licensing requirements in a petroleum or synthetic based formulation. Then we work with the additive company to maximize the amount of additive used and to boost the additive package in selected performance areas to achieve an optimum performing additive package for reduced wear and extended drain intervals. This is unlike the vast majority of companies who, because additives are expensive, use the minimum amount of the least expensive additives required to meet the minimum API requirements.

We then utilize a blend of synthetic basestocks with known performance characteristics as a replacement for the petroleum basestocks to optimize performance in areas of lubricity, volatility, viscosity index, oxidation and nitration resistance, pour points, flash points, deposit control, soot handling, emissions, etc. We also will utilize a highly shear stable V.I. improver to ensure viscosity retention throughout extended drain intervals. This replaces the inexpensive and less shear stable V.I. improver used in the API licensed petroleum formula. We do laboratory bench tests before running field tests to verify the superiority of the synthetic formula in actual use. We also continue to monitor the performance of the oil through close scrutiny of tens of thousands of oil analysis tests per year across a wide variety of vehicles all around North America and the World. AMSOIL INC. has been collecting used synthetic oil samples from passenger cars since 1982. No other oil company has such a vast data base of the performance of synthetic lubricants over extended drain intervals.

AMSOIL INC. has continually improved the performance of its products over the years. The best performing oil we've ever made are the oils we make today. In addition, new technology has allowed us to improve performance as the introduction of our Series 2000 oils. Our standard products outperform the competition and the Series 2000 products blow them away.
