Subject: Squeaky Noise around Engine

Message:
I have a '99 5.2 with 50K miles. Original fan belt. I know, I'm getting ready to change it. Anyway, there is a squeaky noise coming from the engine bay and when I open the hood and listen it actually sounds like its coming from the cab side of the engine not upfront by the fan belt but it could be just me hearing it wrong? If its not the fan belt itself, do the pulleys need to be lubricated? What else should I check?

Thanks guys.

Joel

Same problem here on my 98. From what I can tell it's the tensioner bearing. The belt has a little lower pitched squeal. I think they are cheap and easy to install.

I'm thinking it sounds like a bearing to me too. The belt squeak is a different sound. I'm hoping to get in there this week and replace the belt and any bearings and see if that will stop it. Brakes just started sreaming at me too, gonna have to do those now.

Instead of the shotgun approach here is an easy way to check some of the components up front for noise. Take a short (about 3') length of pipe and put one end on the area in question. Listen into the other end to pinpoint the noise. DON'T get the pipe tangled in the fan or belt ! Good luck.
