Well, generally speaking cooler is usually better for power. Most maufacturers run hotter t-stats for emission reasons. And some believe that running a cooler t-stat keeps some of the intake charge from burning completely which allows raw fuel to wash oil from the cylinder walls.

Im just a bit more old school and prefer a cooler engine because a cooler intake charge is more dense which inturn provides more power.

I have a 1992, have run a 180 t-stat for the last several years with no problems. My belly gasket is blown right now, looking to put the MPI manifold on to solve that problem. The engine seemed to run a little cooler, but it is hard to tell here in Texas. My engine always seemed to be pretty hot regardless.

This has been discussed many times before on this board. Here's the rub. A cooler intake charge is a good thing for performance and efficiency; Boyles laws and all that. But does a cooler water temp = cooler intake charge? Maybe, nobody seems to know.

If the truck is running good now, and you have the stock computer, I would not change the thermostat. When you change the computer, use whatever is recommended.

I had a '92 5.2 once with the MP Computer. The instructions with the computer recommended the 180 stat. At the least, its a hedge against detonation (preignition/pinging).

YES! run the 180// it's gonna save you money on gas, and give you more power.
