Subject: Rear end service - synethic?
IP: Logged

Message:
I want to go ahead and service the rear end on my R/T. I read in the owner's manual something about some friction modifier that should be added to a rear end service. I am going to use Mobil synethic gear oil (I hope two quarts will do the job). Anyone use the friction modifier? Is it necessary? What kind of results have you guys had with synthetic gear oil in the rear ends? I believe the R/T runs on a 3.92 LSD rear diff....correct me if I am wrong.

You only need friction modifier for LSD rear
If you do not know what rear end you have jack it up and spin the wheels. If the wheels both turn in the same direction it is a LSD and you need the modifier for the clutches in the rear end.

Didn't all R/Ts come with LSD rear ends?

The diff in my R/T was starting to howl when I changed the lube. I used Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube and that's what I would recommend. It doesn't need any friction modifiers; it already meets all of the requirements for the diff.

Also don't forget when you're getting the lube, get a tube of the gold sensor safe rtv silicone, since there is no gasket on the cover.

Or a tube from the local dodge place... Works great with no leaks and you only need one tube for one nice thick bead...

Most synthetics do come with the friction modifier allready in them... The best syn on the market is Amsoil, but Mobil, Red Line, and Royal Purple are all real 100% lab made syns unlike all the hydrocracked junk that is also out there advertised as 100% :)) AND I think you need 3 quarts if not 4 for the bigger rear end in your R/T... Might want to get a new rubber plug as well since they're not all that expensive... Might save loosing all that nice expensive syn later on down the road one day...

Two quarts of Mobil synthetic and a tube of friction modifier (CRC from NAPA) took care of things just fine. The manual calls for 4.4pints...but with the friction additive it put the fluid level right at the fill hole. I used black silicone...works for me.
