I have a 2001 Dakota R/T, every now and then when I am wide open in first and it is time for it to shift into second the engine hits rev limiter until I let off of the gas and then it shifts and I can get back in the throttle, this has cost me a couple of races with mustangs because they pass me when my truck is just bouceing off rev limiter. I read somewhere that its a governor pressure switch that needs to be replaced. I was just wondering if there is any truth to this or if anyone has the same type of problem and has found another solution. This is also a brand new transmission.

Yes sir!

I had a GOV pressure sensor on its way out a while back.... It acted EXACTLY as you described. Mine also thought it was still moving at a red light and would take off in 2nd gear sometimes.

LOL.. I have the same problem... I've done a lot of research on this... contacted many performance shops and dealerships... its the internal rev limiter built into the CPU, its there to protect the valve train, theres not much hope to override it....happening at 5200 RPM, right? how many miles on your truck?
There are things you can do to get it to shift earlier...
1. increase airflow! K&N FIPK...IAT relocation.
2. hotter IGnition! new brass cap rotor, plugs and autolite 3923 plugs, maybe a performance coil..
3. this one is tough...but a sure fire way... only go about 3/4 throttle thru first... you'll catch em in second anyway...those mustangs don't have the balls of a 360 backing em up..hell most of em don't even come with a limited slip..I worked for a mustang parts dealer(dont hate me, I own a 1965 stang too), most newer stangs need at least 1500 dropped into em to get them up to the R/T...
4. a shift kit is a possibility, since it will allow you to 'alter' the shift point, bringing it down a bit for the 1-2 shift..but a pain to install.

KRC performance sells a computer add on that is supposed to remove the speed limiter (115 sucks!)
but not sure what it would do for this...
I replaced my cap and rotor today, and it seems to have eliminated it...for now..

heres where my 'discussion' of this is at...I listed all my mods, there, the ones that helped with this the most were the ignition and air delivery... the trans cooler helped a bit, but was more to help the tranny stay cooler...A GOOD Idea anyway, these trannys run hot behind that 5.9....

I have a 01 Dakota R/T as well. Mine does the same EXACT thing. I've read that the BG M-1 Flash will override this problem and let the tranny run like it's suppose to. This came from alot of other R/Ter's having the same problem. Any flash you do will most likely fix the problem. Your hitting the rev limiter before it shifts and the flash enables the rev limiter to be brought up to 7,000 rpms instead of 5200rpms. The BG Flash will allow it to shift at 5400rpms instead of the stock(weak)4800rpms.
The other option is to have your valve body work on. You can get an aftermarket valve body from www.apsprecision.com or www.thefastman.com.
This also will fix the problem. Apparently this is a problem for most so your not alone. It's just not a recall and probably won't happen.

Thanks Spali! thats some good info.... YEah it was a recall on the pre 99's, and supposed to have been dealt with by the 01 year, sounds like I''m going to get the flash done, it sounds easier to do than the valve body...only problem is that I'll have to do the valve springs too..I don't think dodge used quality valve springs and if Im going into higher RPM's I want that insurance!

It's the info I've been collecting for some time now. You could do the Flash now and the valve body later. Let me know when you get the flash if it fixes it. Keep me posted by email at Spali32@yahoo.com. Thanks. We can share 01 Dakota mods. You'll probably get the flash before me, since I'm just getting ready to install Mopar/PPH Headers soon and HS 1.7 roller rockers after that. How much higher rpms are you going???? I believe the stock valve springs start to float at 5800 rpms. My truck will be set up to max power at 5400rpms. Are you getting a new cam??

I wasn;t sure how high I was going to take my rpms, I am sure I want to run nitrous, so i need to have my valvetrain ready for that.... not going to do a cam, the 1.7's should open it up enough, a cam and 1.7's may cause piston clearance probs. I just moved to Miami, so KRC is just up the coast, I was planning on contacting them to do my flash. I need to get my M1 and exhaust done first, then I was going to get KRC to set up my nitrous at the same time as getting the flash done...since the rev limiter will be gone, I'll have more comfort in using the NOS!!

I believe there are plenty of R/Ter's running the stock valvetrain with nitrous. 5400 rpms would be a save and plenty of RPM's for the stock cam. The 1.7's will not cause any piston clearance problems. YOu can double check with KRC, but I haven't heard anyone having any piston clearance problems with the 1.7's. KRC can hook you up with the flash. I currently have a modified beer barrel and want to dyno it before going to the M-1. What are you using for an exhaust?? I have a 3 inch exhaust with a 3" center in/out Spintech 3441 series muffler. It has a nice rumble to it right now. When I get on it, it tries to sounds like a nascar.....lol. It will get a little louder once I put the headers on in the next month. Have you taken your truck to the track, What did it run??

I meant the 1.7's and a higher lift cam could cause piston clearance probs, from what I've heard....right now, I just moved from a smog controled city, Atlanta, to Miami....THANK GOD for no more smog inspections!!!! Currently my only exhaust mod is the 3" flowmaster 40 turndown...When I get the money, I was planning on removing the cats, going to the midlength Ceramic PPH headers, and adding the MBRP Cuda style exhaust, along with the Shaker hood... I'm going for looks and performance... I haven't had a chance to take it to a track, and it might be a while, there aren't any drag tracks near Miami....except I think the Moroso track, and its about an hour away from me. My best 0-60 time so far has been high 6's, but average is around 7.2.... EXCEPT when that damned rev limiter interferes, then its about 8.5 (ugh!) I'm loosing over a second due to the damned factory setting. I think I got lucky, as I bought my truck new, and I think the previous owner pampered the snot out of it, I don;t think they ever really got into it, It drove like a brand new truck when I got it, and it already was at 30k..... I'm about to put all my other mods on hold until I get the flash done, its really getting on my nerves....I got smoked by a 350Z last night because of it....I had him too, and even caught back up to him by 50mph, by 100mph I was still neck and neck with him....until the speed limiter caught me....
Most of my mods so far have been basic stuff, except the personal tweaking I've done which cost my only time, but now I'm ready to dig into it, Like I said, I just moved to miami, and all these porsche and ferrari driving around, just give me an itch to take em on....hehe
Yeah, I really like KRC...The do some great things with Daks, the only problem I have with em is the NSR rule they have... NSR=No Street Racing.....Screw that, Ive been racing on the streets since I got my license, and have never had an accident, nor endangered others, I follow a stict rule of doing it safely, and when there is a limited amount of risks involved...IF it ever seems that I might be putting someone at risk, I immediately back off...its not worth dying for
