I have a 1998 Dakota with a 318 and 3.5 gears with everything stock as far as I know. I have a friend with a 1999 dodge ram with a 318 and he gets alot better fuel milage than I do and his dad has a 1998 ram with a 318 and it's bad on gas too. I was just wondering if anybody knows why the 1998's are so bad on gas and the 1999 are that much better? any help would be greatly appreciated due to rising gas prices. also which engine has more horsepower???

thanks

the 99's come with the new slt engine wich is a smaller liter size, with lower compression .....which in return will waste less gas...

Has anyone checked to see if the 99 is lighter? If they have the same displacement and everything is close to the same then the lighter truck would get better mileage...right?

no, the eninges and trucks are the same, no difference, plus, are the trucks with lower mpg 4x4, or carrying extra weight? and do they all have the same size tires? maybe u just need a slight tune up. 2-3 mpg difference really isnt too big of a deal either. more details could help you out on this situation
