I finally found myself a nice truck, that is, if nothing presents itself before Monday at noon.

Im the proud new owner of a 1999 Dakota Sport Extended Cab, Loaded, 5.2L V8, 4x4 and low low miles (only 50500, almost 51000 miles)

I haggled the dealer down to 10999 plus tax, 5%; title ~65$; and lic plates, 65$ here in Iowa.

Its a nice lookin truck, but i know for a fact i want a billet grill, clear corners, CAI, and a spray in bed liner...

what would all of ya suggest for mods to make it better on gas, and a lil quicker in the 1/4 (i know its not a race truck, but no one said it couldnt be fast too)

i dont have and wont have a lot of cash to dump into it, so suggestions of inexpensive things are that much better...

???
-Borg Warner Cap and Rotor
-Autolite 3293s
-??

i also forgot to mention, i get a free oil change and 3/3000 full warranty for now. so im good for a few mos. then im switchin to synthetic (Mobile 1)

Ross, I have the same truck, and the fist mods was a new air intake and exhautst system. These engines need to breath freely. After all what good is a hot looking truck if the drive train can't perform?

Hey and congrats. I have a 1997 5.2 extended cab Also low miles (40100). First thing I did was a cold air intake its a 360 (thats the brand) and that gave me a little over 3 mpg more on the highway and about 2 city, and definately improved on acceleration. Next I bought a soft bed cover and on the highway that cuts alot of wind resistance and I gained almost 2 mpg more on the highway with that. Hope I was able to help.

Ross,
read some of the back posts about modifications. There is a ton of useful info.
If you make your own air intake go to jocko's in des moines off of 235. They carry more aftermarket mod's than anyone in iowa. Including: plugs wires, exhaust, headers,etc.etc.etc.
congrat's. good choice. Take care of it and it will be reliable truck.
I've own mine 5 years and had no issues. preventative maintenance is my rule of thumb.

anyway, anyone with more help please keep going, i love these trucks, and im new to this size of motor, and 4x4 - ive never had one before...

as for all of it, i AM going to do a cold air intake asap. what about plugs and wires... ive allways ran the bosh plat 2s and 4s.. hear those are a no no and to use the 3293s and accel wires...

also, my 4x4 manual transfer case... when i want to drop it into 4hi or 4lo, how do i go about doing that... i know i dont just drop the lever into whatever while im moving.. so what is the proper way to shift in and out of 4wd mode...

esp! no, just a lucky guess!!
i run the 3923 plugs.
As far as your tranfer case: your can shift on the fly perferable 20mph or less into high (only).
Or at idle before taking off (normally what i do).
You must be stopped in neutral or park to shift to low though or great disasters will happen!!
from 4 wheel to 2wd you can shift out of at anytime. moving or not!!

It is a shift on the fly transfercase. while moving, just pull back on the shifter, use a constant force, dont just jerk on it. Into 4 lo is a little different, I cant completely remember, but i think you stop, and put the tranny in neutral, then move it to 4 lo. but I am 100% positive about the 2wd to 4 hi shift. also there should be a sticker in your glove box that tells you what rear end you have. It is either 8.25, or 9.25 and filled with 3.55, or 3.92 gears. if there is no sticker, look at the rear diff cover, if it has 12 bolts its a 9.25 (the good one) and 10 bolts is the 8.25 (not so good one) there should be metal tags on 2 or 3 of the bolts to the cover, those will tell you all you need to know about the diff. Also to find out if it is a limited slip, or a one tire fire, jack it up and spin one tire by hand....If the opposite tire spins the same way, it is a lsd, if it spins the opposite way, it is a crappy old one wheeler. go with either a k&n FIPK, or an airaid intake. jba headers, and I prefer the sound of flowmaster duals, but magnaflow is ok too. Stay away from borla, it sounds like exhaust made out of pepsi cans. hope this helps.

to get it in 4 lo you need to be rolling at like 5mph in neutral. but 4 hi anything under 45 mph is usually ok

You are both wrong! Into 4 low, you must be STOPPED, you just pull the shifter back to 4hi, then to 4 low not stopping at neutral. I just read it out of my owners manual of my 99. and you can go from 2hi to 4hi at any speed, 100 if you want.
