My roomy has a 2001 Ranger extended cab 2wd. His seems to start a little faster than mine, but when cruising at 60-65mph, he's taching around 2400-2800! I tach 1600-1800 at the same speed. I can own his ass any time I want, and I've done it before :D!

I've had both truck, and it would be a real close race. I ran my stock 2001 Ford Ranger Supercab 4x4 manual 4.0SOHC at the strip, and ran a 16.0 at 82mph (I have the slip). I now have a 2004 Dakota Club Cab 4x4 manual 4.7, and I don't know if it would run in the 15s. The 4.0 Ranger is only rated 23hp less than the 4.7 Dakota, and the Ranger weighs about 500 pounds less. I like the Dakota more than the Ranger (and get about the same gas mileage), but I can't say for sure that it is quicker.

I have a reg cab 4.7 2003 with the 5 speed auto by Mercidies or how you spell it . it runs a 15 flat at the track with a cover and a box with two fifteens in it and i have a removed tire but it could be the hotchkis tvs that is helping it launch hard.

Mercedes does not build a transmission for ANY dodge trucks. The five speed you are referring to is the 545RFE built by chrysler and is installed in Jeeps (4.7L) and Rams (4.7 & 5.7L). The only vehicles using Benz trannys are the 300C, Magnum and the Crossfire. The 300C and Magnum only have a Benz trans if equipped with the 5.7L otherwise they have the chrysler trans. Just wanted to give you some real info. No Mercedes parts in you Dakota's trans but an excellent trans no less.

The problem with the ranger is you can't get the sohc 4.0 in a regular cab. I know somone who swapped a sohc 4.0 into a regular cab 2wd 5spd and it will run high 14's all day. I tried for several months to order one in that very configuration and the bastards at ford wouldn't build it.

Really? I had a 1991 Ranger Sport 4.0 Regular Cab 5-speed manual, granted that engine made a bit less power back then.

The Ranger and the Dakota aren't really even the same class of truck IMO so who cares which is faster?

Actually, for a short period in 2001, you could order the SOHC 4.0 manual in a 2wd regular cab XLT up here in Canada. I know of at least one such truck.
I had a 1992 2wd regular cab Ranger Sport with a 4.0 manual - that old motor was nothing special as far as power. It pretty much petered out at 4000rpm.
Has anybody run a 4wd 4.7L Dakota at the drag strip? I am just curious on what it will run.

That kid must be sniffing glue.

From what i have seen the 4.0 overhead cam motor makes zero torque down low. A guy in my bass club owns a 2001 ext cab 4wd ranger with that motor 4.10 gears an d265/70 16 tires on it. That truck is joke when it comes to towing. It struggles pulling his empty boat trailer up a ramp and with his boat on it you have to use low range 4wd to even get it to budge. He also says it struggles bad to maintain 65 oin the freewat. His boat might weigh 2500# fully loaded on the trailer.

My boat is close to 4k trailered and i dont have any of those problems with my dak with the 4.7. For me power is not an issue.

Damn. The only problem I ever have while towing with my 4.7 4X4 QC is it may sometimes come out of OD with my 5-45RFE tranny.

But it basically will pull several ATV's, family of 4, and all my camping gear 80MPH up pretty much all the steep a$$ hills I can find. The Ranger would not do much better completely unloaded if any better at all.
That's TORQUE baby!

Rangers are dependable as hell though from what I've seen. I almost bought one years ago. Would have been a 4-banger 2.3 Liter. That way I could have the motor mounts in the right place for a 5.0 swap :-P

Kids... what do they know ;)

Same experiences as jb... I had the 4.0l V6 Ranger auto and it could not tow my 16' flat skiff at any more then about 70mph. It dropped out of OD on even the slighest incline. But on the other hand my 4.7l V8 Dak can tow at 90mph without any problems and very rarely has to downshift on overpasses. Now clearly I don't tow at high speeds, but both trucks get the same mileage while towing cause the Ford was working overtime trying to pull the load, while the Dak is just cruising! As an owner of both trucks I perfer the Dak.

i used to own a 1993 Ford ranger. In 2003 when it was time to upgrade, i was looking to buy another ranger. I test drove a 4.0 4x4 with a manual tranny. I also test drove the auto version. Then i decide to go test drive a dakota just for fun. The 4.7 dakota auto smoked both the rangers without a doubt. Been a dodge fan ever since.

I agree completely that the 4.7L Dakota will out tow a 4.0L SOHC Ranger, as the Dakota has 52ft/lbs more torque. However, the trucks would be very close in a drag race between similar trucks while empty. I can't believe nobody has posted a quarter mile time for a 4x4 Dakota. My 4x4 Ranger ran 16.0 at 82mph in the quarter bone stock.

justin, no it's NOT scotch tape. It was special reflective FOIL tape and was temporary at that while I was testing the intake tube. I've just never changed my photo there. Been meaning too.

Here's how I've left it for a while. Mostly stock until I re do the intake tube to where it's not luoder than a jet air plane!!!
This setup with the stock filter box is alomost TOO quiet in contrast to the full intake tube I ran with a cone filter.

I didn't like the stock air hat. It covered up the engine too much. I've got another idea in the works.

My 2003 RC AWD 4x4 does a quarter in 15.75@89MPH weighing about 4500pounds. Incidently, my brother has a 4.0 EXplorer and pulls a 5000lb 26ft Airstream all over the East Coast and South for over 40000 miles so far without any real problems. The 4.7 is much stonger, but don't underestimate the little 4.0.
