That's the right rear for your Dakota , from what I've seen all the 4.7's have 9 1/4's in them . My girlfriend's '99 318 Dakota has an 8 1/4 w/3.55's but I've driven another '99 318 Dakota with a 5 speed and it had a 9 1/4 with 3.92's and a sure-grip.

Perhaps it is the 4X4 that gets the 9.25 inch pumpkin?

I have a 2001 QC SLT Plus, 4.7 Automatic, 4x4, Heavy duty Service Group, Towing Package, Tire and Handeling Package.... Mine came with 3.55:1 9.25 rear end. The only thing that drives me crazy is how anemic the front drive train componets are when compared to the super heavy duty rear end! The first time I crawled under my truck I said "hum...." heavy rear drive train light weight aluminum front drive train????? So far so good but I would have prefered the front setup to be the equal of the rear.

Not sure what logic DC used when choosing between the 8.25" & the 9.25" rear ends.

Thus far, I've heard of three configurations that get the "upgraded" 9.25" rear end:
* V-8's with 4-wheel drive
* Heavy duty service group with or without tow package

Given the inconsistencies I've already seen within DC products (especially when it comes to oddball niceties), I'm sure that there are going to be some one-offs out there as well.

BTW, Sandman: I SOOOOOOOOOO second that!!! One of these days, I'd like to go nuts & do a solid axle swap for the front end. I thought about doing it with tax money, but opted for performance instead.

Just to confuse you all a little bit more about DC.

I have the 99 dak with 5.2L and it's a 4x4. It came with the 3:55 gears and 8.25 rear end.

I bought the heavy duty tow package and it has an automatic transmission. So it seems like a crap shoot to me on which rear end you get.

I'm beginning to think that it's not so much a particular engine/transmission/drive system that gets the 9.25, but it's just whatever happens to be sitting on the rack when the truck comes to the rear-end installation station on the assembly line.

BTW, I have the 9.25 with 3.55 LSD, HD service group, tow package, 4.7, auto, 4WD, and the SLT plus package that includes the 31 inch tires.

I contacted Chrysler customer service about this issue after my dealer could not answer why some trucks come with 8.25's and others come with 9.25's. The following response appears to be accurate, at least with the vehicles I've been able to check.

"Thank you for your reply.

In regards to our previous correspondence, I answered your question based upon the standard equipment on the 2002 Dodge Dakota 4x4 Quad Cab. However, upon speaking with production and viewing the list of your factory options, we indicate that your vehicle is equipped with the full-time transfer case. Because your vehicle is equipped with this, it will get the 8.25 rear axle. Dodge Dakotas equipped with part-time transfer cases get the 9.25 rear axle."

It's my observation at this point that V6 engines get the 8.25 regardless. V8's get the 9.25 unless equipped with AWD. With AWD they get the 8.25. Any follow up information will be appreciated.

If the rear ends use the same design the larger one will almost always be stronger. THe biger ring gear means bigger stronger bearing and caps. It also means more spline on a larger axle. I am guessing that the AWD T/Case limits towing capacity of the truck and because of the AWD T/Case limitation you realy do not need the bigger stronger axle and carrier.

Swapping ring & pinion is definitely not a light undertaking. It requires a decent mechanical knowledge on how a differential works & a couple of special tools.

At a minimum, you will need a dial indicator to measure the preload and some gear marker (paste-like material) to verify contact patch during the re-assembly. And, depending on the differential/third-member, the assembly/dis-assembly process may also require a press. Unfortunately, I've never messed with a Dodge diff...so I cannot tell you whether a press is needed or not. All of this is of course, in addition to the standard plethora of tools including a torque wrench.

Here's an article on Randy's Ring & Pinion (AWESOME shop!!!) regarding tools:
http://www.randysringandpinion.com/gear/g0299.shtml

And another one with a high-level overview on what settings are required during re-assembly:
http://www.randysringandpinion.com/gear/g0798.shtml

My bottom line is that I have done a lot more than most when it comes to automotive work, but there are just some things that are better left to professionals. If I were to swap the 3.55's in my Dak for 3.92's, I'd hit up some of the local four-wheel shops, as they do this all the time, and get some quotes for both parts & labor. Chances are, you'll be able to find the ring, pinion, and install kit cheaper somewhere else (translate as on the web), and then choose the shop that seems to have the most knowledgable staff...which may mean paying a little more than you would at "Bob's Automotive Emporium." But, that's just me...

Good luck.
