I'm now the owner of a used 2000 Dakota R/T after the guy I co-signed for defaulted ---that is another story. Anyway, I'm thinking of keeping it since I had to sink some money into it. My latest quesion about the beast has to do with the tires. Mine has P275/60R17s on it which is a larger than stock tire (stock I think is P255/55R17). I just came back from a trip that I know is 297 miles exactly. My R/Ts trip and odometer only measured that distance as 266 miles. Also, I have measured the speedometer and it is off by about 6-7 MPH (reading too low). Obviously, these devices are not calibrated for the size tire on the truck. My question is, what are the implications of running around with these large tires from a wear and tear perspective? I had both inner and outer tie rods and front wheel bearings replaced already. The mechanic said the larger tires cause more stress and may have contributed to these components wearing out early. Since I don't know how long this size of tire has been used on the truck or what the original owner did to it, I'm not sure on that one. Another mechanic I know expressed concern about an incorrect speed signal being sent to the transmission causing problems. So, do I get a new set of stock tires and pitch the big tires I have now that still have about 50% of their tread left? Or can I simply drive on with the bigger tires knowing that the speed and mileage are not recording correctly. By the way, I don't know any computer mod tricks, so count me out of those types of solutions. Thanks for any reponses.

There is no problem with running those tires till the tread wears out. The size of the tire really has no bearing on wearing out suspension components. Now if you put a significantly heavier wheel, say some chrome 20 inch rims then you could create some rotor and suspension wear and tear. However, the bigger tire you are running right now has virtually no effect on wear and tear. In fact, I would imagine the increased sidewall of the larger tire would absorb more road shock then then thinner rubber.

Thanks for the response. So there should not be any transmission issues then either? Overall, no real adverse effects on the vehicle?
