Need help ASAP!
I have a 2001 quad cab 4.7 4x4 42,000 miles with a HUGE electrical problem. Truck just shut off as I was driving and now will not start. All the dash gages do not move and odometer reads “No bu5” when the key is turned to the on position? Does anyone have any idea? My local shop does not report any errors and I don’t trust dealers. Did anyone ever see or hear about any other problems or recalls since mine is out of warranty now! (of course).

no buS on the display?? Sounds like total PCM meltdown. Should have gone into limp-in mode first, though.

Thats what I found. The PCI programmable Communication Interface may need to be reprogrammed and of course you need to take it to a dealer for that. So thats where I'm at, as we speak it's being towed to a local deal and I'll see what they say.

With the truck parked (of course..) turn the key to "on", can you hear under the hood the fuel pump turning on? Will make an electronic whine for about 1-1.5 seconds. Get someone to turn the key to ON while you stand over the engine if you have to. If you can't hear this... PCM is toast... been there, done that :\

Walt,

Not trying to argue here, but,

isn't the fuel pump on the Dak, in the fuel tank?

DUDE!

Check your FUEL PUMP RELAY!

It's under the lid in the electrical compartment next to the battery.

Here's the deal. I installed a HOME BREWED anti theft system into my truck. I spliced into the wire that goes from the PCM to the FUEL PUMP RELAY in that electrical box. I have to turn my key to "ON" and then touch a hidden sensor to start my truck every time I get in it. If I don't touch the sensor my truck doesn't start and after like 10 seconds the gauges start to light up and it displays NO BUS in the odometer.
I Did this on purpose to make theft nearly impossible.

Go check your fuel pump relay. You can switch it with one of the other relays in the box (of the same type) just to see if it makes a difference.

As you can see. There are more than one relay of the same type. Just switch the fuel pump relay with something not important. The relays are the small black cases with the white dots. If that don't help, you either have a open wire, connection, or bad PCM.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The fuel pump relay was switched while sitting roadside waiting for the tow truck.
The entire computer was replaced and still no help. The next step is that they are looking for shorts or bad grounds thought the truck. I will know more today and will be sure to pass the info on.

The same thing just happened to me! Only I wasn't driving mine at the time. I ran it fine one day until i came home and parked it in garage and the next morning it would not start.
It turns over (starter) but engine will not start and I get the "no bus" display on the odometer. It's a 2000 dakota quad cab with the 4.7 liter V8. I switched the fuel pump relay as suggested with no luck. I do not hear a fuel pump "whine" noise when trying to start. HELP!

Todd, yeah it's in the tank lol... do what I said though, something clicks on under the hood (or, it sounds like it's under the hood anyways) that is related to the fuel pump. Something electrical, never bothered looked into what it really was.

Visitor,

Just remembered this, look in your fuse box for a fuse called "Auto-Shutdown" There will be a relay for it and a fuse for it, check to make sure that fuse isn't blown. It's one of the larger fuses, either 30a or 40a (40a I believe). One blew on a friend's truck at the track, truck cranked fine but wouldn't start, couldn't check codes, I can't remember if he got the No Bus thing or not, but it's worth a shot.

On 2001's, there's still that fuse, but it's not called the Auto Shutdown, it's labeled differently, but I don't remember how it's labeled, maybe someone with the 2001+ service manual can chime in?

Hmm. Yeah if you guys had a manual you could actually read the wire going to the fuel pump just as someone else turns the key on and see if it gets approx 12VDC for a moment.

That would narrow down if it;s electrical or just a bad fuel pump.

On the Chevy vans I drive for work the fuel pumps die with NO WARNING. Just one morning you will come out and it doesn't work!
Maybe these are the same way. Kick the bottom of the fuel tank a few times real hard to try to shake the internal fuel pump. This worked for me once on one of those Chevy vans. The fuel pump didn't work at all one morning (second time for me but on a diff van) and when I kicked that pig hard I could hear the float bounce up and down from kicking it so hard then the fuel pump worked again!

The "auto shut down" relay and fuse are both OK.
And yes the needles on the gauges raise slightly as the key is first being turned (along with all the usual warning lights). Not sure if this means anything at this point but if I leave the key in the ON position that little engine symbol stays on along with the "no buS" notification. (It might not mean anything because the low fuel symbol stayed on too and I know there's plenty of gas in it) I'm so frustrated at this point I'm ready to call a tow truck. Any more things I could check?

AND THE ANSWER IS……………….

THE ‘CRANK SENSOR’!!!!!

Unfortunately I have no idea and either did the general manager at the dealership where this part is located. Apparently, they ran out of ideas and called Chrysler corporate office for help. They had them do some test and sure enough that’s what it was. I’m going to pick it up tonight.

So ‘visitor’ see if you can have this part replaced, hopefully it is the same thing for your truck.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

Shawn

Amazing! You would think the fuel pump would still have ran before cranking for a sec???

Glad you got it fixed.

At least if a thief ever tries to steal my truck he'll get that code and give up unless he's got a tow truck!

Let's hope that's all "visitor" has wrong on his truck, because its like a 38 dollar part, and you can put it in yourself, just takes a flexible and rather long arm :P

I had towed my Dak to a garage, but haven't heard back from them yet. I just hope I don't have to tow it from there to a dealer! By the way, where is the crank sensor located ?

well, the garage charged me $57 to tell me they couldn't fix it...towed it to the dealer and they fixed it...cam sensor ! ($257)
I had wanted them to inspect it also (expired april) but they said I would have to drive 100 miles first (something has to reset ?)...just hope I don't get a ticket in the mean time. I have noticed when I come to stop while driving the RPM will waver back and forth between 500 and 1000...quite annoying! ..I hope that will stop soon..

I had this same problem about a month ago, but I had a bare wire that was hitting the parking brake release. It would then short and blow out the fuse in the #10 slot which is for the engine relay. Mine would do nothing, it would light up the dash, beep a few times, then display the "no bus" message. Replaced the fuse and the dealer fixed the short. No problems since.
