Subject: What muffler are you running with??

Just wondering what you all have.... Ive got a flow master right now, but I heard that they are some of the most restrictive mufflers that you can buy, but god I love the sound. With the SCer going on, what should I be looking to get? I love a fairly loud exhaust when you get on it, but mild while cruzing. I dont think that there is a better sounding car than a mustang.... what way would I want to go to get close to that?

I'm running a Dynomax Ultraflo S/S. It's got a mellow sound at idle and almost stock db at cruise but, if you get on it, it sounds the way a V8 performance engine should. The Ultraflo is stainless steel oval, straight-through design 2.5" in 2.5" out.

I have a 1992 Dak 5.2 4x4. When I replaced my muffler I went with the Flowmaster Big Block 70 series. My stock exhaust was 3in in to the muffler and 2.5 in. out . The muffler I put in is 3in. in and 3in out. and about 24 inches long. I was amazed at the horse power and torque I picked up almost 20 hp according to my Gtech meter. I certainly like the Flowmaster sound. Based on my experience I would go with flowmaster again.

no muffler. the 4.7 sounds best without it, sounds really good through the rpms, rapps when its cold, and off throttle at high rpm. i love it. Its been heard over a mile and a half away. theres more interior resenoance with the windows closed than there is when they are open.

Flowmaster. It's about equally as loud at idle as it is through out the RPM's.
Therefore it gets attention just idleing through the parking lot.

I love doing this. Check mine out by clicking on the link.

Dakota52318, listen to some of these guys. Like you asked which muffler is going to be as loud as possible all the time no matter what. Maybe some of these kids think thats great but, in the real world, that's very annoying.

You sound like an old man. I like loud exhaust (except on ricers' cars). I think I'll like it less when I get old and decrepid but I have a long time 'til I get there.

The FLOWMASTER 40 series delta flow is quiet as sh*t with the windows up and just cruising at highway speeds.
But at slower speeds (in parking lots) or whenever you get on it the OTHER people sure as sh*t can hear it!

Those STRAIGHT THRU types (like a glass pack with baffles, etc) are probably loud as hell on full throttle but quieter at idle. Screw that. I'll keep my Flowmaster. I'll run two of them when I go duals.

I have a flowmaster with a turndown. Not sure what series. How can I tell? Its quiet at highway speeds. It can be heard comin down the road but its not loud. Now the Z-tube with the 9in filter is loud. It made my truck a lot louder when i get on it than the flowmaster did. Its a real sweet sound. I waste a lot of gas just listening to it.

I got the Dynomax Super Turbo(17749). I love it because it is just slightly louder than the factory muffler, but it is not annoying on the highway. I am still using the original exhaust pipe.
I had to cut several slits in the muffler to allow it to slide of the stock pipe, and then installed the new muffler with the inlet on the bottom and the outlet on the top at a slight angle. This allowed the original pipe to be attached to the outlet. I had to create my own mounts for the muffler but the end piping still used the original mount. I did not loose any low end power, but I am also running the HO cams so that may have made a difference.
I use to have a flowmaster 50-series single-in dual-out, but it was just too loud within the cab. I did loose some low end power with this muffler but gained some of it back with the HO cams.
I got both of these mufflers from Summit because they were the best price.

GraphiteDak, are you running just a Flowmaster 40 muffler with stock pipes? Or a whole system? I was thinking but doin a complete cat-back, but if I can get away with just a muffler I might do that.

I have just the muffler with the stock pipes.

I welded in the muffler in place of the old one. The old one is LONGER so I had to extend the Flowmaster with some pipe.
Funny thing is I just got the truck at the time and picked up the muffler from Lopers. They looked it up (because I forgot to check it myself) for the pipe diameter. They said it was 3" so they sold me a 3" Flowmaster 40 series Deltaflow.

Sooo, I used 3" pipe to extend the length of the muffler to bolt back up under the truck and had to cut and weld gthe 3 inch pipe into home made reducers down to the stock 2 1/2" pipe.
I also welded on a chrome 3" tailpipe.

I LOVE the sound of this truck. It gets me HARD just listening to it especially in parking lots, freeway underpasses, parking garages, etc!

Just last night someone asked what I had for an engine in the thing when they heard my truck. People always ask.

Here's some pics.

Weight reduction from stock is a bonus here :-)

Extended the muffler like so.

Then I welded it back up like so. Notice that I cut a notch out of the 3" pipe near where it connects to the 2 1/2" pipe and as I welded around the 2 1/2" pipe I bent the 3 inch down to 2 1/2 inches making a smooth transistion and no reducer fitting needed thanks to a hammer and my welder.

Did you notice any power difference with just the muffler? Another post said his cat-back didn't do sh*t powerwise.

The Flowmaster is JUST perfect.

It's loud enough in parking lots to get LOTS of attetion and people come to me and ask what I have under the hood.

It sounds BAD a$$ in underpasses and garages.

And at highway speeds at steady throttle you can barely hear the smooth rumble.

Last time I went to the muffler shop to buy pipe, I looked at some of the cut aways from some of the newer popular mufflers.
Well some of those damn things are just straight thru designs using baffles in a muffler looking body. Not much different from a GLASS PACK! But costs a lot more. Those types are QUIETER at idle and get LOUD AS F#CK at high RPM's and on the highway.

I like Flowmaster. Never known anyone who had one and that didn't like it.

I've never really noticed performance gains from a muffler alone either. I'd assume you need to match the pipe diameter to your application and run true duals with headers to get much noticable gains. I've always had headers and true duals until I got my Dakota. It's harder with emmisions to throw that kind of stuff on :-(

I am basically looking for a unique sound that not many people have. Everyone has or has had the Flows including myself. Just wanting to be different. Alf is the aeroturbine worth the wallet smashing price or is it just another muffler. Looks pretty interesting, might be worth trying.
