Subject: Groaning front end 4.7
IP: Logged

Message:
After hearing all this talk about ball joints, I'm planning to check my front end on my 2000 4.7. At low speed turns, like in parking lots, I hear an oscillating groaning. I thought it was the power steering pump, and that's basically what it sounds like, but the stealership says everything is okay. It does not "buck" or tug at the wheel. Also, if I'm in there, what is the best way to check ball joints in case they need replacing? Thanks for any suggestions.

I was just noticing in the past few days that my 2000 dakota 4.7 was starting to buck and tug when i turn sharper corners like when i am parking. Its acting like im turning in 4-wheel. Is this a sign of the ball joints dying?

Could be a hub assembly. They make a groaning sound when they are going bad. Its a sealed unit which sucks because you have to replace the whole thing.

While you are having your front end inspected have them check everything. Take your truck to a mechanic you trust. Dak front suspensions are notorious for problems. Have everything replaced with Moog parts that you can and everything should be better after that. I don't know who make after market hub assemblies so you'll have to look around.
