I have a 94 Dakota, 318. Ever since I bought the truck in November it has been doing this: When I am driving down the road and I release the gas it almost clunks, the rpms drop fast and it sounds like something in the driveline. I already replaced the u-joints, and it help a little. I have heard that some vehicles just do that....not a very reliable source. Anybody familiar with this? I am wondering if it is a trans problem.... Any ideas or experience?? Thanks

I got the same damn problem. I took it to the dealer and they said they couldn't find anything wrong with it.
02, 4.7 V8 CC 4x2.
I thought something might be wrong with the tranny.

Same problem with the 91 5.2- dealer never finds anything wrong- but it's been doing that for 200000ks! Dodge. Noticed the tranny mount is off center a little- could be the culprit.

i have a 93 dodge dakota 318 single cab short bed and it does the same thing when i let off the gas it makes a clunk and if im coasting and tap the gas it will clunk. and every now and then when i take off it clunks and doesnt stop clunking intill i let off the gas also if im on the highway going about 70 and let off and bearly hit the gas it grinds for just a sec any ideas i just figured the tranmisson is going out

Well chris, mine is not quite the same. Mine seems to be, almost like there is slack in the drive line and when I let off the gas and the rpms drop the drive line clunks. Not repeatedly, just once, and if I hit the gas right it does it too. Chris it sounds like your tranny is going out, sorry to say. But thanks to all, at least I feel a little better it is not damaging. I will announce if anything changes.
