Has anyone had experience with the helicoil insert and which brand do you recommend? Any tips on use would be greatly appreciated.
I have on 01 QC 4.7L 4x4......I stipped the caliper knuckle threads while changing brake pads. I took it into midas and they said to replace the whole knuckle $$$$.

Helicoil it and call it good. I have always used the Helicoil brand and never had a problem. In fact, the heliciol threads are stronger than the cast iron you stripped out.

The only problem is that the helicoil might be longer than the threads in the steering knuckle. You will need to glue the helicoil in with thread locking compound and cut off the excess Helicoil with a dremel cut-off wheel. Problem solved!

They also sell oversized self tapping caliper bolts that will thread into the stripped hole, but these are a one time use item, not recommended unless you are going to dump the truck.

I've never used them on a vehicle myself, have seen it done on some things with no problems, BUT...I would not recommend their use on something like a brake system. More expensive to do it right but better to be safe than sorry. Hope this helps your decision.

Silverbullet,
Had the exact same problem doing the brakes on my 2000 about a month ago. You have no idea how many expletives I used cussing out the engineers on that one. Stripping out a caliper bolt??? Come ON Dodge!!

Anyway, the Helicoil does work, and I have had no problem. They use Helicoils in engine blocks, stamping presses, and a lot heavier applications than brakes. this advice is from a 25+ year maintenance mechanic. USE THIS ADVICE, HOWEVER. The bolt you will be trying to find is an M9 bolt, and most metrics are M8, M10, etc. Be sure to go to a Metric bolt/fastener retailler, and get the kit for boring the hole, tapping it correctly and using the proper Helicoil. This combination is imperative!! It cost me $60, but it is a whole lot cheaper than a new knuckle. Plus, it was re-assembled in 20 minutes. Best of Luck.

i just put a bolt in a lathe, drilled and tapped it for the size i wanted
then ran a thread die down the next size smaller on the caliper bolt

used the drilled and tapped 1/2" bolt as a helicoil

worked great! so the helicoil should too
