Is it possible for a shade tree person to change the plugs or is it best left to a dealer? Are any special tools necessary?

I changed my own. But be ready for ~2hrs of work. 1st you got to take off the air intake hat. then loosen some coolent pipes, unbolt each coil that are on top of each plug, have a long socket to get them out. I figured it out myself wasent that hard.

First of all, WHY?

Do you think you'll get anything out of it, possibly, but probably not.

Special tools-yes,

A spark plug wrench, with a long extension, as stated.

Be sure not to get any of the dirt from the area in the whole whilst the plug is out. Try a blast from an air compressor hose down each after you remove the coil over plug things. And DON'T look for what you think are spark plug wires, cause they're not the common 1/4 inch thingys.

Changing plugs int he 4.7L is CAKE!!! Just keep in mind that
the 4.7L doesn't have plug wires - each cylinder has it's
own cap. Each cap is easily removed by unscrewing one
bolt, then turn the cap a little and pull straight up. Then
you can get to the plug with a simple 5/8 spark plug socket
and a medium extension. The two cylinders farthest to the
back might require a short or longer extension. Unscrew
and pull the plugs out. Gap your new ones, put a dab of
silicone anti-seize on the threads of the new plugs and
install - start by screwing them in by hand - don't want to
strip the aluminum heads! Put the cap back on and your
done!

NEVER pay someone else to do this - the most
uncoordinated guy can easily accomplish this. If you can
change oil, you can change plugs.

Thanks for the info. I'm changing plugs because it has been about 35,000 miles since they were last changed at the dealer.

You know, I'm really starting to hate this truck. First I had trouble with the headlight swap(which I have never had with any car). Now I'm trying to change those spark plugs and more trouble. The #1 plug was barely snug in the head to begin with. I kept unscrewing it to take it out but it didn't come and the plug socket slips off when I try to bring it out. I even wormed needle nosed pliers in there to grab the plug but it doesn't come. Any suggestions before I sell the hell with it and just pay the dealer to put up with this crappy engine design?

buy a new plug socket so the tighter fitting rubber thing will hold the plug for you.

No, the problem I'm having is that the plug spins freely like it is completely loose but it won't come out of the head no matter what I use to try to get it out. I first thought the problem was the plug socket but it is a new one.

Then you should take it to the dealer and show them what they did.

I replaced my stock plugs at 29K miles. As I replaced them I couldn't believe how severely worn each one was. The manual says change them every 30K miles and I expected typical wear, but I didn't expect to see that amount of wear. The widest measurement on the gapping tool fit with LOTS of room to spare, we're talking MASSIVE gap here. Should they be that worn? Also, how many volts do the coils produce? It must be a sh*tload to jump a gap that wide.

I just replaced my stock ones too... and the gap was WAY off... We are talking twice the manufacturer specs.

I replaced them with the autolites, but can't pin the increase in HP to them, as I did a few other mods at the same time. The computer has a few more miles to go until it learns the new stuff, but new plugs are always a plus, if done right.
