I have never done the front brakes on my 99 Dak SLT before. I just bought the truck a few months ago and they were in ok shape then, but now they need replaced. What's involved, other than rotors and pads? Is there a bearing seal that I need to get??? On my old S-10 the bearings were inside the rotor, and you had to buy a push in seal for the outside of the rotor. I was just wondering if the Dak was the same way.

Thanks
Z

This is going to sound rude, but it's not. Buy a manual!

This is an involved job, and it's critical that you get it right. Each and every step. If you think you can get *all* the correct instructions here from somebody you don't know, you're mistaken. The repair manual uses pages of text and pictures to explain it. You're not going to get that from a forum response.

Besides, the manual will come in handy for so many other things, it's worth the few pennies it will cost you. Of course, you could just go down to the public library, they may have one.

Hopes this sounds rude, because it is.....bob, in all of they typing, you could have been helpful. Instead you were just an ass. I have a manual FYI, but I am at work right now and was planning on going to get the parts on my way home. Since yesterday was friday, I really didnt have the time to go searching through it. Instead, I went out with my family. So, to make a long story short, if your not going to be helpful in the lease little way then please dont post. Never post again!

Not sure exactly about a 99 but on my 01 replacement was pretty easy. I needed a torx head socket for the bolts. Don't remember the exact size. Spring for the socket because its much easier/faster than the wrench I used. The pads are pretty much the same as any other vehicles. The spring clips are a little bit of a PIA. The cylinder is on the inside and a compressor or a c-clamp and the old pad will work. The bleed screw is easy to get to. It's on top of the caliper. Make sure to remove the master cyl cap when you compress the pistons. Make sure to bleed the brakes afterwards. Pay close attention to how the parts come apart, they are a little different, and replacement should be pretty easy. Hope this helps a little.

ZoSoAir, you are both rude AND stupid. Looks to me like .boB was sincerely trying to be helpful, but because he didn't give the answer YOU wanted, when YOU wanted it, he gets flamed. Do you always blame your laziness and poor planning on other people?

Ok back to the subject.......

the hex should be 7mm and the rotors come right off. after you remove the retainers on the lug studs. then you can use a claw hammer or wonderbar to pry on the bottom part of the rotor to dislodge it (worked on my 98) jim c is right on about the rest.

Guys,
Just a word of warning here. I did the fronts on my 2000 Dak about two months ago. Be sure to hang the calipers with some wire or a long zip tie when you take them off. Just so you don't stretch/pull/damage the brake line. Also, on the 2000, they have Ate brakes, and are metric. The caliper bolts aer a weird metric size, and actually don't require that much torque to re-assemble. That said, when I WAS assembling the right front, I stripped out one of the threads, requiring a Helicoil insert. At what I would guess was less than 30 ft.-lbs. This tells me 1) be careful read torque specs, and 2) this damn Dak is a royal piece of sh!t if a brake component goes down that easy.

Jimmy Page,

Mind you own F@#king business. This isnt your post, so stay off it. I dont ask questions just to referred to a book. What would be the point of the web site then huh??? To the rest of you that were helpful, I appreciate it. The brake change went smoothly this weekend, and am now riding normally in my Dak.

ZoSo, I own a '92 and a '95. They're identical. Same with my father's '98. Pull off your tires, take the two bolts out of the caliper, slide it off. Now swap the old for new pads, compress the caliper (master-cylinder cap needs to be opened, but left ON the hole to prevent fluid from spraying out), and plop it back onto the rotor. Screw it in, put on your tires and you should be good to go. The rotors have no seals/gaskets on any of the three vehicles I mentioned. The metal rotor just slides off and a new one slides on.

And to the other two, I woulda' taken offense to that post as well. I have not just the regular manual that comes with my trucks, but also the actual service manual. However, just because I own that piece of paper doesn't mean I won't get on here and ask for advice. So don't turn people away here. They may not understand something in the manual and need it explained, or they may want first-hand experience, which no manual can provide!

Advising someone to get a service manual just to blow off their question is one thing, doing so in an effort to save them future grief is quite another. And ZoSoAir, unless you've suddenly become a moderator on this board then you're in no position to order people not to post.
