Hi, I just bought a used 5.2L Dakota, well very used I mean. It is a 1993 with a ton of miles on it, but it runs well and will be great for hauling whatever. The problem is I don't have an owners manual. So here's a dumb question, what weight oil does the 5.2L take, and what is the pan capacity with a new filter? THanks.

Probably 10W-30 in the manual. You might want to try 10W-30 High Mileage formula in the spring, winter, and fall. Almost every company makes them now. Summer might be a good time for 15W-40(gas&diesel) or 20W-50 High Mileage if it has a lot of miles.

5qts, give or take. Shouldn't need 20w50 unless that thing rattles and smokes like a 50,000 mile chev.

Since you have a ton of miles on it, whatever the owners manual says about this is no longer valid.

Oil should be heavy enough to maintain proper pressure. That's it. There's no magic formula. Too much pressure creates internal drag, and wastes engine power pumping oil. Too little and pressure won't be high enough to float the crank. Winston cup cars use 0 to 5 weight oil to qualify. I'm not sure how you measure 0 weight oil, it's like water I guess.

Depending on where you live (how cold it is in the mornings), I would start with a 10W-30 and see what your pressure is. If the gauge is pretty much in the middle when hot above idle, I'd stick with the 30. If it's towards the low side, move up to a 40 weight. If you live where it's warm in the mornings, start with a 5W-30. My engine has almost 50K miles, and I use 5W-30 Mobile 1.

I also have a 93 5.2L dakota with 112k miles. I suppose that's a little low for being 11 years old, but it still runs well. I use regular 5w30 with good results. The "5" just indicates the temperature or climate conditions that the oil is appropriate for when first starting it up. "0" weight oil just means you can use it at an even lower temperature. It is thinner, but saying it's like water is a little misleading. I'm surprised the Amsoil rep hasn't seen this post and added his information. I also have a question about this truck though...does anyone know what the towing capacity is for a 2wd 5.2L with an automatic?
