Subject: Best headers for 5.2L?
IP: Logged

Message:
OK, what would you guys recomend for the best manifolds for the 5.2L Magnum? I have plenty of room under the hood, but don't want a dang tractor-trailer manifold at the same time. I'm just looking for some extra ponies if possible. Oh, and I have my dual Flowmaster cat-back scheduled for install as well. If my stock manifold is already decent, what would be recommended as a replacement Y-pipe? I hear that's where the restriction in my exhaust system is.

One final thing. I am looking at a four-barrel Holley in the long-run, and based on the formula, I need a carb that will provide 460-550cfm, but the lower four-barrel Holley's go 390cfm, then 570cfm. I was thinking of using the 570cfm carb if it won't hurt my engine. This is a ways off, but I'd like advice ahead of time.

If you have the 92-93 manifolds I wouldn't worry about headers. The headers will help, but it's a big expense for what little you get out of it. To really get a HP boost from headers you need the y-pipe to go with them and that really jacks the price up. I've considered just doing the y-pipe upgrade with the 92 manifolds. I don't know if anyone else has tried that. I think it would be almost as good as headers and it would cost a lot less.

I have have a set of JBA's ready to bolt on my R/T. So, who am I to say not to buy headers? If you got it, flaunt it!

My 5.2L is a '95 model, so I don't have '92 headers. Well I do have a dang good set of '92 headers, for my 3.9L though :p!

Well, if it's that expensive, do you think I'll notice any difference when I get my dual 2.25" pipes put on, even though it's a cat-back for now? I plan on true duals, but later on, not now.

What about the Doug Thorley long headers that come with the new Y pipe. You may lose a little bit of low end torque since they are not shortys but will gain HP, I think.

I do like the overall construction/bends of the Doug Thorely over JBA's. They look like they have better quality control in their manufacturing. The thing I don't like about the Thorely headers is the 3 bolt flange that was typical of the 70's and 80's header collector design. I'm not saying the Thorleys ever will leak there, but it has been my experience that this style collector flange is prone to warpage and leaking. That's why I chose the JBA's. They come with the gasketless OEM style flange that never leaks. The Thorely headers would probably make more HP than the JBA's.

how to fix a #8 cyd misfire this is what i have done, I did a compressor test on all cyd. all seven cyd reading was 150 psi #8 reading was 90 psi. I put some oil into #8 cyd and the reading increase to 120 psi. what is my problem, could it be ring or valve? wait for any one replay. thank you.

I have a 93 5.2. Where could I find a good new y-pipe to use on my Dak?
Also, should I get a Gibson catback exhaust (not duals) or just get a 40 series Flowmaster and make duals out of it? Thanks.

1) Take a basic English clas
2) This thread is about headers
3) If you're burning oil, rings

Now, back to the subject at hand! I assume the 'three-bolt' thing you talked about referred to the Y-pipe not being permanently connected to the two manifolds? If not, what is it so i can get a mental picture going on.

I put headmans on my 93 and they seemed to fit better than others I tried. As far as the compression thing does it pop or backfire just a little on decel. If it does it is a valve.

Frank,
Sounds like a broke ring or a broke piston land where the ring seats. You can check to see if it's a valve by taking your comprssion gauge and hooking an air chuck up to the air bleed valve on the compression gauge. Most gauges have a tire valve sticking out the side where you release the pressure after a test. Instead of releasing the pressure, stick your air chuck up to this and pressurize the cylinder with compressed air. The cylinder in question will need to be on the compression stroke of course. You will have to hold the crank with a large socket and break-over bar while doing this so that the engine does not turn when you apply air to the cylinder. If you have a standard trans all you need is to put it in gear and have someone hold the brakes.....
It will take 2 people to do this. You also need to remove the airhat/cleaner and the oil filler cap. Once you have everything in place and you pressurize the cylinder you will need to go check the exhaust, the throttle body, and the Oil Filler Cap hole for escaping air. If air is coming out the exhaust you have a burnt or bent exhaust valve. If air comes out the throttle body (not likely to happen) you have a bad/stuck intake valve. If air comes out the oil filler cap you have a broken/colapsed ring or a broken piston.
