Uhm, can we say "redneck"?

Dude, straight-pipes suck. I mean we have rednecks back home that run glass-packs and they sound horrible, but straight-pipes are ridiculous. I've actually shot at the tires of idiots who ran straights and decided to ride around my sub-divison while I tried to sleep because the cops ran them out of town at dark! At least spend $5 on a glass-pack.

They aren't that loud. I have straight pipes with the cats, and it doesn't sound too bad. Sounds a lot like my neighbors 350 with glass packs. Just because you have straight pipes doesn't make you an a$$. I have them, and as long as you go easy on it, they are not that loud. What I get pissed at are the guys on crotch rockets, and the Honda's with expansion chambers running around - them guys are always on the gas and its more of a whine.....

I feel you there Stephen. I've ridden a Harley, and I grew up on dirt-bikes, but a dman crotch-rocket is just a noisy piece of crap. They're uncomfortable to ride and make too much noise. Plus most morons around home ride them and rev them wide-open, even though they have rev-limiters... tards!

Personally i like the look of dual side pipes. My Dak (99 Sport,4X4,318 V8,MSD ignition,Holley Air cleaner, and Gibson Exhaust.) Mine is a Gibson System that is split right behind the cat. It is factory up to the cat, but still sounds real nice. Put some nice Chrome tips out behind the Passenger side rear tire. I do agree that stright pipes sound horriable on injected engines.

Well nobody probably cares about my opinion but I think anybody who wants their truck to sound loud just for the heck of it is an idiot, espescially if they`re willing to compromize loosing power!! I would like to hear some suggestions on dual exhaust for a 1989, 3.9L that well add more power.

as long as you've still got the converter, its not going to be that loud, not any louder than any other exhaust w/o a cat.

I ran a straight pipe after the cat on my Chevy 350. It sounded almost the same as my 40 series flowmaster on my current 4.7.
Before I put the flowmaster on I ran a straigt pipe after the cat. The 4.7 cackled to much on deceration. So I put a flowmaster on it.
I also bumped up to a 3" pipe after the cat which got rid of the "tinny" sound it had before the muffler went on.

Give it a try and see if you like it. If not add a muffler later.

I don't know if it harms every engine, but I know for a FACT it ruined two of my brother's six trucks, and possibly one more, but not proven. That's right, my brother, a die-hard Chevy fan, has been through six Chevy trucks (well he's on #6) while I am still on my first Dakota with a second! Now for explanations.

First one was a Blazer with a 4.3L in it. Engine trouble constantly, but he kept the pipes on this thing. Eventually he sold it for a red full-size Chevy. This one he cut the muffler off of, and wound up ruining the engine, but he was also racing this with no mods. He slapped a band-aid on it and sold it, then got a Nissan 4cyl (forget the engine size) 4x4 with a lift-kit. He thought it sounded SWEET when he cut the muffler. When all was said and done, reports showed the engine had been damaged by removing 'parts of the exhaust system'. Now he buys a Ranger 4x4 with big mud-tires, and cuts the pipe on it. Before long it is smoking (oil) and starts losing power. Sells it and has a Chevy 2wd custom-built at a plant in TX or somewhere. Totally sweet ride. Has an LT1 engine, is slightly lowered in the front, factory tinted windows, different heat/ac for front and rear, four-doors, the works! He has some stock mufflers on it that are one step below racing. He cuts these off and starts having engine-trouble! Funny thing is, he had to pay to get the mufflers added again before he could have the thing repaired under warranty!!

Now it may just be me, but either Chevy makes utter pieces of crap, which I highly doubt based on my friend's old-school full-size truck, or removing a certain amount of back-pressure is a BAD thing. If you're rich enough to afford the repairs, go ahead. But if you want to make a lot of noise, just get a POS glass-pack or something similar, possibly a small Flowmaster (like 40 series).

Hmmm... That's interesting. I have straight pipes on my truck, and they were on it when I bought it. I have had little engine problems, and the only ones were from super low coolant and a leaky water pump. I would like to rework my system as it only has this small pipe on it, and i'd like to run some 2.5" or 3". Anyone else know of damage being done with straight pipes?

Most Dak owners who drag race run a straight pipe instead of the cat converter (mufflers are required for Street and Truck classes). I know quite a few and I have not read nor heard of engine damages from running a straight pipe.

Like I said, it was never proved that the straights damaged his second truck. That may have just been coincedence. It was proven on the Ford and the Nissan though.

i think it would hurt a carb. engine more than a efi. engine.the straight pipes would lean-out the air-fuel mixture, but on the efi engine that wouldn't be a problem

"I WANT AS LOUD OF A SOUND AS I CAN GET." What are you thinking about when you say something like that? Not "I'm looking for the best exhaust flow." or "I want the most performance possible and I think mufflers just waste power." No, just want it loud! What, do you hate the neighbors? Are you just 16? I'm not trying to flame you for my amusement but, why is loud so important?
With the cats in place it won't be that loud anyway. I had a V8 mustang and I put a straight pipe in place of the cat but left the muffler and resonator on. IT WAS LOUD!! I put the cat back on because it didn't run quite right, no permanent damage but, more importantly, the cops could hear me for blocks and would even track me by the sound. I used to get pulled over a lot during the loud exhaust period. One cop even told me "I pulled you over even though I don't know how fast you were going but, you sounded like you might have been speeding!"
Good luck with your pipes, I hope you grow out of that phase!

back pressure loss due to straight pipes is NOT what harms an engine. the only real damage that can come from straight pipes is that it allows cool air to hit the valves and cooling them down "too quick" (ie warped valves), this is not a common problem with a catylitic converter and/or muffler, because is acts as a bottleneck and allows the valves to cool down normally.

also, straight pipes are not "redneck" and shooting at peoples cars is stupid. just because you don't like the way straights sound, doesn't mean they suck.
