OK, I have decided to switch to AMS 75W-90 Series2K gear lube in my truck. I figure the best way to remove any old debris, as well as all the old lube, would be to take the ten bolts off and let it drain out, then clean everything, put on a new gasket and reassemble the thing, then fill it up. Now, if I remove those ten bolts and pull the back of the differential off, am I going to have parts come falling out all over the place? I want to get inside and clean the thing, but I don't know how complex a differential is, and I've never dealt with one beyond my legos way back in the day. If anything will come out by removing that rear cover, would it be hard to reassemble? If the whole thing falls out, where do I get a new rear-end cheap ? :p

You will have some serious problems if anything falls out!! No, do exactly as you were going to do and everything will be just fine. Nothing will fall out. Just in case you didnt know, when you refill it, you only fill about half way. Owners manual will tell you exactly how much. Good Luck.

Disassembling a differential - Amsoil Gear Lube

Message:

Sephiroth, Nothing will fall out : - )

You and I exchanged a couple of Emails.
Good Choice on the Amsoil S2K 75w-90 Gear Lube.

As to whether anyone should use 75w-90 or 75w-140, personally I would use the synthetic 75w-90 since it will perform above and beyond the recommended petroleum 75w-90. Also, the heavier weight __w-140 is not recommended since it would have a negative impact on your fuel economy (mpg), and is not needed.

I have Freightliner customers driving Class 8 Tractor Trailor Trucks using 75w-90 synthetic gear lube in their difs. Tuff enough for them ... Tuff enough for me.

Helpful Differential Recommendations:

-Flush (drain) as much of the old fluid out.
-Differential fluid capacity depends on ring gear and axle housing size.
-Do not over/under fill differential. This could mean a capacity difference of a quart or more and may cause overheating problems. (See the owner’s manual for proper fill level)

AMSOIL gear oils are formulated with friction modifiers for limited slip differential applications. There is no need to add limited slip or additional additives. If you choose a different manufacturer than Amsoil ... fine by me, just offering my services.

-After changing the differential fluid, drive the vehicle in 7 or 8 figure eight turns, so the new lubricant can work its way into the axle assembly.

Synthetics provide the long-lasting protection, fuel efficiency and dependability needed for top performance, even extreme-pressure conditions. Stays fluid in cold temperatures for easy cold-weather shifting, protects in the hottest of conditions as well.

Amsoil Series 2000 75w-90 is excellent for use in passenger cars and trucks requiring a GL-5 gear lube, including those with limited slip differentials.

FYI --- Interesting Information

Gearlube ratings have nothing to do with viscosity's. The main difference is it's additive package. A GL 4 has anti-wear additives in it where the GL 5 has extreme pressure additives. There are certain applications where you must use a GL 4 instead of the GL 5 because the extreme pressure additives will chemically eat the yellow metals (brass bushings and syncros) at
certain operating temperatures. The GL 5 is a stronger product and can be used in most applications. To give you a rough idea of viscosity's comparisons, a 90 weight gearlube has the same consistency of a 50 motor oil.

AMSOIL PRICING (March 2004)

Amsoil Series 2000 75w-90 $9.20 Qt. Retail Pricing --- and $7.20 Qt. Preferred Customer Pricing. You can become a preferred customer for $20 per year and $10 for a 6 month trial and receive up to 25% off retail pricing.

I "believe" that GM charges over $13.00 for a quart for Goodwrench Synthetic 75w-90 GL-5 gear lube.

Yeah I saw the prices online. Now apporximatly how many quarts would I need? I plan on draining this thing DRY. Once the old stuff drains out of the middle, I was going to jack up the right half of the axle and let all the old gunk drain from there also, then repeat with the left half. I'm hoping I don't need that 12qt deal, hehe! I'm not rich yet.

The amount depends on the year and diff type. Mine, 2002 AWD 4.7 auto, took a bit over 2 quarts in the rear diff, while the front took a bit less then 2 quarts. In total, I used all of 4 quarts for both.
