Subject: 318 timing chain? surging /chugging
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello all,

I have a '93 dakota with the 318 and 224k miles.
I am getting this surging/chugging at cruiseing speeds (almost like it's missing).
I think it the timing chain, i.e. the distributor is mis-indexed.
If it is the timing chain, how hard or involved is it for a shade tree mechanic to do?

TIA

It is usualy the bushing for the dist. drive. It gets loose causing a surge at cruising speeds.

Can you ellaborate on the 'bushing for the dist. drive."?

I'm assuming it's under the pickup coil?

There is a bushing in the block below the distributor drive shaft. (holding the shaft in place) It allows the shaft to wobble to much causing the surge.

Well,

With the help of a buddy and his offset wrench, I managed to pull the distributor and the bushing seems fine no wobble at all. But her back to gether and still have a surge/chuggle under light accel of cruiseing speed.

Any thoughts on how much play I should see from turning the crank pully to movement on the rotor, before the timing chain should be looked at?

If the timing chain has more than 50,000 miles on it, it's scrap metal. Granted, I've seen them run well past 100,000 miles, but after 50K, they're no longer considered worthy. As for the rotor movement, I'm not sure how much that is, but it can't be much. If there's more than 1/8 inch movement between the cam and crank sprockets, it's toast. If it has 1/2 deflection in the chain, it's toast. If you have 220K+ miles on one you must be the easiest driving sumbitch on the planet. I've only seen one Mopar engine toss a chain. It was a crappy plastic-over-steel 318 gear. I was rollin' down the Interstate when it jumped. It still ran, but it was missing a lot and it was getting worse by the minute. Tough old bird still got me home...another 13 miles. When I tore it down, there wasn't a single un-bent pushrod. All the pistons' tops had valve outlines on them. Three rockers were punctured by the pushrods. Luckily, the valves held tight. It sounded like it was running on 3 1/2 cylinders, but it'd still crank and run. I went through and replaced everything. That little 318 runs better than ever now.
While you're replacing the timing set, might as well do the water pump too, as well as the belt, and all the hoses.
The timing marks are on the lower side (driver side) of the timing gear housing. May be covered by crud. Should be visible by leaning over fender and looking down at the crank pulley area.

sounds to me like your ignition coil has gone bad, seen it many times, every one that is not a mechanic says distributor just that they "know someone that is happened too" but most likely it is the coil, insufficient spark energy will cause surging, especially the faster you go as the coil has less time between sparks to do an energy rise. If your ditributor was miss-indexed most likely you would not be able to run at low speed due to the spark timing being off too much or the thing would just plain run bad and sputter all the time.

it depends on the engine you have, small block (318 or 360) is on the front of the engine on the driver's side down low in front. way down low, it is around the harmonic balancer Usually you will see a 10-0-10 scale or a 0-30 scale or on some models even a 0-20 scale. by down low I mean you have to be looking from the top front of the engine down low to where the lowest pully on the engine is, not to be beneath the engine looking up, as you can't see it from below.

I have a 1990 Dodge with a 318. It has a whole bunch (270+) of miles. It is backfiring through the carberator. It all started when the thermostat stuck and I got it hot. It seemed find, but a few days later it started popping loudly through the carb and has no power. At first I thought it was a head problem, but still starts easy and I checked the compression at each cylinder, and it appears to be fine 140+ at each one. I played with the distributor thinking I could put it back in time, and it didn't help. The old engine does not burn a drop of oil. Any ideas? Could the timing chain have jumped a gear?
