Yes a bad O2 sensor will cause rough or erratic engine operation and could cause poor gas mileage.

You shoulda' seen my '92 Dak with a bad O2 sensor. It was a V6 Gen2, so it idled rough to begin with, but man that thing shook when the O2 started going. Replacing it made it drive like a new truck. I'm waiting to see when the O2 goes out on my '95, but it still idles smooth as heck.
