Subject: Please Help!! Temp. problem

Ok, I have a 99 4x4 5.2 exteded cab sport and lately i have been having problems with my temp. guage. It usually starts while i'm idling i will let it idle for awhile and it will start dingin and the check guages light will come on and my temp will be way hot. so i'll shut off my truck and start it back up and start to take off and the temp will go back to normal or like the other day i was in the car wash and it got hot and when i pulled out it just got cold. but i'm not having any trouble with my engine when it does this. I'm taking it into my auto class tomorrow and pluggin it into the computer to see if it can pick up what is wrong. Any advice on what it might be would be greatly appreciated!! THANKS.

Check the temp sensor itself, that'd be where I would start.

My temperature gauge flipped out on Wednesday night when I was coming home from the club. I stopped and re-started the truck just as you did. The light went away. Well about another mile down the road I smelt the sweet smell of antifreeze and when I stopped my truck it was spraying everywhere. Long story short my water pump went out. I'm sure it probably had something to do with that fact that I put a 180 stat in just the day before. The poor water pump must had felt like it was over worked and threw a fit. $70 Bosch pump from pep boys,

I really don't see how a 180 degree T-stat is going to blow a water pump. All the T-stat does is keep the water circulating in the engine instead of returning it all to the radiator for cooling, once the water hits 180 degrees the radiator main-loop gets brought into play...unless you installed it backwards or something, or some junk fell into the engine and got jammed in the water pump.

I actually didn't change it. I had a shop do it but who knows they could have done something like you suggested. I just noticed the time frame coincidence of the water pump failure and the T-stat change. Oh well.. everythings running now but I'm out $280 bucks.

Most temp problems that show up when stopped, or going slowly, then go away at higher speed, are bad fan clutches. At speed air blows through the rad. When stopped, the clutch has to lock up. Seeing the fan spin doen't mean it's working.
