Hi,
After seeing several posts on 5-speed trasmissions, I wanted to warn/ask Dak owners about their experiences.

At 60,000 commuter miles, my 4.7L Dak 5-speed locked into fourth gear. No reverse, no 1-3 or fifth. No neutral. It turned out the shift rail had gotten bent, requiring a rebuild. Since this truck is a 2000, it was out of the 3 year/36,000 mile warranty on drivetrain. Also, having manual transmissions since I could drive, it was unacceptable that a "foolproof" part like this would fail. No holeshots, no heavy towing, regular maintenance.

Has anyone else out there had a similar problem? Also, for those of you with a 5-speed, be mindful of the weak link that I found in my tranny.

I'm not happy with mine either Chet. First and
last one I'll own. I'm tired of all that in and
out shifting it does all the time on normal
highway driving.

I'll try a four speed OD next time on a test
drive but I'll be looking real close at the
manual one.

I had made several post regarding the nv-3500 as junk. i've had 2 different 4.7 daks and both of them had trans problems. The current one cost me a bit though. I am at the tailend of a viper t-56 swap, because i could not bare the thought to trust my life to a nv-3500. My truck is an '03 4.7 RC and the rear wheels locked up in fourth gear (coincidence, i think not)My first dak broke the input shaft on a fourth gear shift. HMMMMMM now yours is STUCK in fourth gear.WWWOOOOWWW

If it shifts like sh%^ and breaks like sh&*, then it must BE shiit!

RadioMan, I think he is talking about the 5 speed MANUAL not the auto.

And anyone who has had Auto's with OD, especially Chevy's, knows they are GOING to shift in and out of OD at times.

On the 5-45RFE I have heard that the newer programming is much better. Mine is a 2003 and mine doesn't shift out of OD but rarely unloaded. And loaded with the trailer I think it shifts better and stays in each gear longer than any other OD tranny I've driven.

If you have an older 45RFE, I hear you can get the PCM/TCM flashed and it will be improved not too mention you will get that extra in between gear :-)

Righto, GraphiteDak, I meant the 5-speed manual. Or the Dodge anual, which is how I took it after they told me how much it would be to fix it. A 5-speed going south after using it for commuting is just bullsh!t. And, ANY truck transmission breaking is just as much BS. If this is what kind of product DCX expects the customer to eat, returning customers will be fewer and further between.
