Subject: Revs for no reason?
IP: Logged

Message:
When i'm cruising at anywhere between 40 and 70mph with my foot steady on the throttle, my engine revs about 300rpm's like it wants to change gears, but never does (automatic 4.7L). Sometimes it does it like every 10 seconds, sometimes not at all. Took it to the dealer and they said nothing is wrong.

My air filter is clean, fuel filter is clean, plenty of fluids, oil pressure good, heat good, battery good..........

Only thing i could think of would be drag from the tires, but they're not even big (31x12.5x15R Superswamper Boggers).

Anyone have an idea????

I'm feelin ya Kyle! I have a 2000 R/T automatic, and it did the same thing to me. I even took it to the dealer and they said the same. I have driven it about 10,000 miles since then and strangly enough it just stopped doing it? Don't know how or why, but it never gave me any probs, other that that annoying rev..

It does sound like the tranny is going into and out of overdrive or torque converter is locking and unlocking, for whatever reasons.

Only other thing that comes to mind is a faulty tps where a part of the potentiometer has gone bad.

Good luck!

Let me ask you one question, have you recently taken your TPS off? Maybe to clean your TB or something? When I did this, my 2000QC 4.7 started doing what you are describing. Drove it around for about a month and finally lost my mind. Took my TB off again to clean it and the sensors again (only one month after doing it the first time) only this time, when I put the TPS back on, I put it on upside down... from what way it was on??? The sticker that said mexico is now facing down. And it never did it again. Maybe I'm crazy, but that is what was causing it for me. Was causing my temp to go WAY high too. not anymore Thank GOD!!!

Kyle, if you have the five speed automitic 4.7,
it's more than likely the tranny's locking
converter unlocking and locking and/or even going
out of over drive.

Mine does it all the time with any kind of grade
in the road and it's really bad when you're in
cruise control. I sure don't like it at all!
I'll never have another five speed auto.

Try replacing the TPS sensor, it costs like $50 and replaces in 15 minutes. My 99 Dakota 5.2L auto was doing that 300rpm thing and i took it to the dealer a few times with them trying different things. Finally i told them to replace the TPS and they did...solved the problems. That was over 1 year ago and it still is good. Replaces with 2 screws and a electrical connector if i remember correct. But do it yourself and save some money.

That must have been for a different motor - no coil wire on a 4.7.
