If you can't find a Wix filter then go to a Napa and buy one of their Napa Gold filters since it's made by Wix and is basically a clone. I bet the aluminum heads on the 4.7 might be a factor in the gunk. I used to drive 25 miles each way to work and always had the gunk problem in cold weather.

kj,
I never wanted to say that, but you maybe right. There's just one problem with that theory, not everybody with the 4.7L is having this problem. I never had the problem.

Has anyone sent this "milk shake" in for an oil analysis? That would confirm what the hell it is.

Most people seem to have the problem where it's cold in winter. I live in western Pennsylvania so mine has done it since the first winter.

I believe that the oil vapors travel up that long oil fill snout and cool off and turn to gunk. They should have put the oil fill right in one of the valve covers to see it it made a difference.

The condensation in the oil filler cap does not necessarily mean the oil has a heavy fuel concentration and/or water. Sometimes it just accumulates in the cap. I used to notice this in every car and light truck I ever owned, especially in temps here in Canada below -18 C / 0 F.

With time it can cause damage, especially for those little old ladies who only take it to Canadian Tire once a year for an oil change. If left unattended that milky foamy stuff turns to sludge in hot stop-n-go. Could this be why motors in very cold climates don't last as long?

I wonder if there is less of a problem with synthetic oil, I have not seen it since I switched to Amsoil.

James

I have an 2004 4.7 quad cab with 5,000 miles on it. I put Mobile 1 in at 2,500 mi. My commute to work is only 4 miles, and I live in lower Michigan. I have seen this sludge problem ever since it turned cold back in November. My question is everyone talks about the problem, but I don't see many options for solutions. I don't feel like this is something I don't need to worry about. I plan to keep this truck for a long time. Can I relocate the PCV valve into one of the valve covers? Or what about making a catch can for the PCV valve, so that this gunk isnt released back into the engine. Whats the concerns with doing either of the above? Any input is greatly appreciated.

Tim

One more thing. I have had the filler neck wrapped in fiberglass insulation with aluminum backing all winter, and still get this problem. I'm looking for a better fix.

somewhere in this board I posted awhile back in response to a "milkshake" problem. to briefly reiterate; my 02 had the same problem with the dealer valvoline dino, the next change i went to mobil syn, then two changes later they changed to valvoline syn. I had the same problem through all those oils, but the mobil wasn't as bad as the others. I then brought my amsoil to them for a change and never had the problem except for one change that I didn't order the amsoil in time for a long trip and had to use the mobil syn. At the next oil change with I noticed that the tech was wiping milkshake from the filler. After going back to the amsoil and ever since, I have never seen the milkshake again. I drive 10 miles per day total during the week and a bit longer on the weekend, change the oil and filter every 6000 or spring and fall or when I go on a long trip. Maybe mobil or valvoline works for others but only amsoil so far has worked for me. I live in Massachusetts btw.
