Subject: pre-magnum vs. magnum.

Message:
I'm getting a 1991 dakota 5.2 4x4 and i'm just
curious about the differences between the
1991 5.2 and the later model 5.2, such as
power differences, internal design differences,
etc. I'm guessing that the magnum is
multi-port FI instead of TBI. Probably some
differences in the combustion chambers and
maybe a little different cam and exhaust
design, anyway, any info is much appreciated.

The Magnum heads will add about 40-50hp over stock LA heads, all else being equal. They have a better flow balance than 340 X heads, despite having slightly smaller valves. Magnum is SMPI. Internally? You can (over-simplified explanation here) bolt the Magnum heads and intake on an LA block and you have instant Magnum. One difference is in the cam and rocker ratios. The Magnum uses 1.6:1 rockers, while the LA's use 1.52:1 ratio. Therefore, the cam lobes of an LA are larger for a given amount of gross valve lift than a Magnum. Pushrod length is slightly different between rollerLA's and Magnums. Non-roller LA's have the longest pushrods. The LA 360 and Magnum 360 are both externally balanced, but the Magnum uses less weight. As for combustion chambers, the late LA's were basically an evolutionary step to what became the Magnum. The swirl-port cylinder heads first appeared in 1985, and were phased in over a few years. This same basic configuration carried over to the Magnum. Basically, the Magnum name was applied as a marketing scheme. MP was selling Commando crate 360's as the Magnum was introduced, and MP still sells "the best flowing pre-Magnum head" which, ironically, adds the same HP as a Magnum swap.

do you by chance no the output of the various versions of the engine. I don't really "need" to make it faster, because I've driven it a lot and it's always been a lot of fun, but I can't deny my gearhead nature...

The Magnums also changed the rocker arm setup from shaft mounted to stud mounted and are now oiled thru the pushrods.

I put a 93 magnium engine and transmission in a 91 dak. I had to use the entire wiring harness with the computer forward of the cab. I also had to splice in the 93 overdrive off switch. The connectors are different. The fuel pump and lines also had to come from the magnium. I also had to use the magnium power steering pump. there is a world of difference in torque and power. The 93 came from a dak that I wrecked.

The 91's were rated 170hp/245 lbs torque. 318 Magnums were rated 230hp/300 lbs torque, though the 92's and early 93's had better exhaust and cam profiles, so they were spunkier than later models.
