I was looking through the manual just the other day on my '99 and the payload was listed as 1800lbs. There's a 1300, 1600, and 1800 available from what I read. I know I put 1650lbs in mine according to the scale at the dump and I wasn't fearful nor straight out on the leafs. Damn close though.

Well, my 2000 manual says 1275lbs payload for the 5.9Lauto*. There is a "*" at the bottom of the page. It says "*R/T models have 2000lb maximum trailer weight".

Ahhhh! I just "fingered" it out.
It says right here that all Dakotas have a basic towing capacity of 2000lbs. With the towing package you can go up from there to a maximum of 6,700lbs with a class 4 hitch. There is no tow package offered for the R/T.The tow package consist of the class 4 reciever and the wiring harness. The factory didn't offer it as an option for the R/T. So, assuming you have a class 4 hitch installed you should have a tow rating of 6,700lbs according to my manual. I have a class 4 reciever.

I don't care what kinda hitch you have. I wouldn't try and tow 6700lbs behind my R/T. I have a class 4 hitch on mine and like I said, with 2500lb boat the ass end sags considerably.

Well, I'm not too concerned about saging. If it is too bad I'll stick a set of airbags under it. I was mainly concerned about the drive train. I didn't want to screw up the transmission or something. What I have to tow weighs about 4,000lbs. I might have to resort to a tow dolly. I really hate those things.

You should be concerned about sagging. If your gonna get airbags thats good, but if you try to tow that much without them then your rear bump stops may be riding on the frame and that is not good at all.

I will probably buy a set through my job. I can get OEM pricing. The more I think about it the more I believe I will get a pair for the back.

Guys,

What about the important stuff?

the r/t is an auto tranny, right?

What about the tranny cooler, that comes on autos with tow packages? I'd be more worried about what I'm doing to the tranny! I've seen a new Chevy 305ci, puling a bass boat down the highway, he had to pull over, and the tranny fluid was boiling out of the dipstick!

What about the larger altermator-not necessary though.

Whiplash, NO offense. You can pull something, maybe without a worry. The trailer towing package, comes with a LOT, of upgrades, receiver, rear brakes, alternator, bigger battery, electric brake in the 7-prong harness, if you have an auto, the cooler, not to mention suspension.

Texas-T,

I'm looking at the 2000 "TOW PACKAGE" right now. It says it is a CLASSIV HITCH and 7wire/4pin harness/connector with pigtail and electric brake controler. That's it. It recomends changing the fluid in the rear axle to synthetic if you plan to tow a lot. They are referencing the 8.25 axle when the mentioned the synthetics. The R/T has the 9.25 axle.

The extra equipment you are referring to is called the HEAVY DUTY SERVICE GROUP. The HDSG comes standard on the R/T and it is optional on everything else. The HDSG adds a heavy duty cooling system, larger battery, and the external transmission cooler. It is part of the R/T package. It's another reason the R/T is more expensive than the SLT or SPORT.

I wanted to make sure that there was nothing involving the PCM. I thought maybe the R/T's timing and/or fuel curve wasn't set up for towing. Someone also mentioned the drive shaft. I want to check and see what the difference is between the R/T's drive shaft and the 1500's. They both have the same transmission and rear end.
