Subject: Rear End Noise
IP: Logged

Message:
I have an 01' 4x4 club cab sport with and auto and 4.7L. I recently had the rear end redone due to the whinning noise which had been mentioned here several times. Recently I noticed a grinding noise that seems quite unusual. Whenever I travel at a constant speed (like on a freeway) for an extended period of time and then come to a complete stop and turn right or left (like at an off-ramp) a grinding noise and vibration for an instant comes from the rear end. If I go straight ahead there is no noise. Also, in regular town driving turning right or left from a complete stop I never hear the noise. Any ideas?

Do you have a limited slip rear end?

If so, it needs to be "serviced". I don't
know exactly what that entails but the dealer
can do it.

Yes, I have a LSD. It was completely rebulit 3 mos. ago. But I find it odd, it only makes the noise after an hour or so of freeway driving. Then when I do a little stop and go traffic around town I never hear anything. Is that unusual?

When the repair was done, was Mopar friction modifier for LSD rear ends added? Check your owner's manual. It sounds to me like it was left out.

The Dodge dealer did the rebuild and I specifically asked about the additive. So I assumed they put it in. Is they're something on the work order that will tell me if they did? Like a part #?

Re: the noise from the rear end I own a 2000 Dakota v8 no limited slip in the rear end and have the identical problem Nick described...I had the dealer go through the rear end and they rebuilt it and said the gears were slightly scratched...guess what? I still have the same problem and now am dealing with the ball joint problem...wish I had more posative news but don't. Anybody out there that has a fix let us know.

RE:My 2000 dodge dakota 4x4 V8 also had the rear end noise mentioned. Friends and myself thought it sounded like a U-joint problem. I took it in under warranty asking the dealer to check out the noise and U-joint. Three days later I had a new rear end, two new wheel bearings and still a noise. I then dropped the drive shaft myself and found the rear U-joint needle bearings were dust. $14.00 at napa for a new U-joint, a press and I was back in business. Took about 2 hours. Also the after market U-joint has a grease zerk not found on the factory one. I understand my truck was still under warrenty but I couldn't risk the morons keeping my truck for three more days.

I have had similar problems, at approx. 16k my truck started doing the same thing, changed the rear lube and added Mopar additive, problem solved. Approx 16k later did the same thing, same fix, same results. A few months back at approx. 50k it did it again, did same repair, had same results. I have come to the conclusion that this is "normal", dont understand it, but come to expect it.

If it is a U-joint problem, wouldn't it make a noise all the time?

On the routine maintenance post above, it has only been about 1500 miles since the rear-end was rebuilt. Isn't that a little early?

I actually noticed the sound the first time I drove it on the freeway (just a few weeks after the rebuild). I didn't think much about it, just figured it was LSD breaking in. Then a few weeks later I made a 2-hr drive on the freeway, and it made the same sound again as I turned right from a stop on the off-ramp. It still puzzles me why it only makes the grinding noise if I've driven on the freeway for and hour or so, then stop and make a right or left turn. Could it be an adjustment with the LSD clutch packs?

I had the same exact problem on my truck, 1997 318 5spd with 3.55 and LSD. After extended periods of driving, turning right or left around sharp bends rear end would grind, chatter, vibrate, whatever you would call it. Took it to added LSD fluid, didn't slove it. Took to Dodge dealer, found the Spider gears were destroyed. Almost positive same thing could be wrong with yours.

Whinning/grinding
IP: Logged

Message:
I bought a '00 dakota 5.9 w/4wd. Just last week I noticed the whinning sound and the slight grinding when I come to a stop. It's now "resting" until I can figure what the deal is. Without having it looked at, a friend of mine said the bearings might be going out? Make any sense to anyone else? All this sounds familiar with everyone elses problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
