My 92 Dakota with a V8 has been having problems this winter. A week ago I was having trouble starting, with nothing happening but the starter clicking at first. After I cranked it hard for the third time, it would finally turn over and move very slowly, until I gave it gas, and it would come up to an idle of 600 RPM. When I braked to stop at a stoplight on a hill a few miles away, the RPM fell like a rock and the engine stalled. At first I thought the engine was having trouble getting fuel, but not all of the variables fit. I decided to change the battery, because CCA were kind of low, and it seems to help the engine crank over just fine now, but I am still having trouble with a rough idle, and a fall in RPM's and dimming of lights when I apply the brakes to stop. Also, the needles on the RPM dial and gas dial have been moving very sporadically. Last, but not least, after I changed the battery, the computer seemed to have lost its shift points, and the automatic transmission didn't shift into overdrive until almost 4000 RPM, where it used to do it at 2500 RPM. Any suggestions?
Does anyone think a serpentine replacement could help, because I am getting ready to replace it. Only problem is, when I went to move the tensioner today, it wouldn't budge. Could an old cracked and possibly smooth belt be elevating the problem?

Had a similar problem with my 98 5.2 litre engine. After replacing the starter I was cranking it over and noticed the belt was slipping. This led to me checking the auxiliaries and found the compressor and clutch seized.

Have a 91 Dakota V8 5.2 Magnum LA motor, that idles
rough, and when braking the oil pressure drops and
wants to stall. I recently had a tune up done and
had them replace the fuel pump and filter. I have
put a new air filter in as well. Now Im thinking
that either the carburetor needs rebuilt, or my oil
pump is going out. Anyone have any ideas?
