Subject: Dakota Oil dipstick?
IP: Logged

Message:
I just bought a 07' Dakota 318, when I checked the dipstick the oil was all the way up to the top mark. When I changed the oil Saturday I put in 4.5 quarts as the book says, then another 1/2 quart once the oil filter had a chance to fill up and that brought it up to a half quart from the top line. What is this "Safe" zone on the dipstick and where is the level supposed to be?
Thanks!

Hi Adam,

I just recentley traded in a 99 Dakota 318 that had 115K miles on it. I always put in the recommended 5 quarts of oil but sometimes the dipstick might read a half quart below full or a shade over full. The level would fluctuate from day to day depending on how long I drove it and where I parked (level to almost level) when I checked it. I would say that the "safe" zone would be where it reads when you know that you have the proper amount of oil, in my case that safe zone was actually a safe range.

read on another forum that the marker (full mark) can be misleading and you should check both sides of it to get a more accurate reading.

Just changed the oil a few days ago and the side with the etchings read just under the full mark and the other side was right at the full mark.

Seem to recall the other thread mainly mentioning the transmission dip stick, but it seems to be the same with the oil too
