My girlfriend has a 2000 Dakota Quad Cab which she bought new. It has the 3.9 V-8 with 40,000 miles. A couple weeks ago a coolant leak was detected and it was found to be an intake mounting bolt rusted so bad it broke off when touched. The dealer wouldn't admit liability and after $200 it was repaired. Yesterday another leak was discovered which is a freeze plug. Has anyone else experienced anything like this or if there are any know technical advisories in either area? Seeking help......Herb.

Ummm, the 3.9L is a V6. Never had a leak problem of any sort on my 5.9L, and it's a year older, my bolts are also in fine condition, of course, it's kept in the garage and hardly driven. You may want to look at picking up a new bolt set, some hoses and whatever else you think might give you problems. Good luck.

Well, I am the girlfriend. So he typed V-8 instead of V-6 people do make mistakes.

There is no need in getting new bolts Yellow99RT all 15 of them were replaced and the gacket was also replaced along with a few hoses, the oil was changed and it had new coolant put in it when it was fixed only after I aggred to pay $200.00. Thanks for your input.

And IntenseDak39 I am here to tell you that the head of the bolt did in fact rust off the shaft of the bolt. As far as the bolts being aluminum I don't know about all that but the bolt that rusted off my truck will stick to a magnet. So that tells me that it was not aluminum. What do you think? Thanks for your input also.

But now I have it in the shop getting not one but two freeze plugs replaced that has also rusted. Have you ever seen that happen on a truck that is this new?

Thanks for your time. Tina

it sounds to me that you just had a coolant leak. If they replaced the intake manifold gasket, they have to replace the intake manifold hold down bolts also. Those bolts are for a fact aluminum and are a stretch type of bolt that cannot be re-used. Are you sure it was a bolt holding down the manifold and not some bolt like the thermostat housing or like?

If you are having your freeze plugs replaced... use brass if you dont want them to rust (i thought thats what they used from the factory???)

Did your truck recently overheat or anything?

Well, I'd take it to another dealer, sure it costs money, but if you save the work order from the new dealer and take it to the old dealer if it shows an error on their part, they should return your money in full, if not, take them to the Better Business Bureau. I had this happen with a faulty Mopar Fog Lamp Installation and they refunded my money. As for bolts rusting, I've seen it happen, when I had headers put onto my 98 3.9L, the shop complained about getting the stock exhaust manifolds off, saying the bolts were rusted, rounded and stripped. Hope this helps, I am off to install my M1.

im a mechanic and have never heard of a aluminum bolt.......whats the torque spec 5 lb.ft. aluminum is very soft. oh and no aluminum will not rust but it does corrode and it does break down when exposed to the elements.
tina coolant has a number of additives (including corrosion inhibitors) that break down over time you should stick to what the owners manual recomends for coolant change intervals
another thing usually a broken manifold bolt will not cause a coolant leak cuz usually (i think) they do not enter the coolant passages......
hope i help
later
