Subject: V8s in 4x4s??

Message:
I am in the market for a new 4x4 and was wondering if anyone could give any advice on the dakota... I was looking at the ZR2 S-10, but I really like the V8 in the dodge and the "real" back seat instead of a side flipdown. I want a club cab not a 4 door. Can I get a 5.2, 5.9, or just the 4.7 in the 4x4 trim? I have a guy who can get whatever I want it just might take a while so I am not in an extreme hurry but I would like to have it sooner rather than later. I have driven a 4x4 4 door with a 4.7 and was really impressed. Should I go for the 5 speed auto or the 4 speed? 3.55s or 3.92s?I am looking to get an '01 or '02. Any help would be appreciated!!

I have a 2001 QuadCab 4X4 with the V8 4.7 Liter engine, Auto trans and 3:55 gears. I am running BFG Land Terrain LT265/75R16 (from Walmart)tires.

I take it offroading and have had no problems. The V8 works well and the extra power is nice to have if you should need it.

The QuadCab is nice to have when you take the family (or friends) along for a ride. The added room and full size seats are great and they fold up for cargo room if needed.

I had a Chevy S10 4X4 years ago and the Dakota is a much nicer and more capable vehicle in my opinion.

As for the 4.7L it has enough power for everything barring the largest of towing loads. I haven't towed much yet but it has handled everything I've thrown at it. Including some pretty tough offroad conditions (rough and rocky old mining trails, sandy and rocky desert washes, etc...) with ease.

Hope this helps.

In 2001 and 2002 you are limited to the 4.7. The 5.2 was replaced by the 4.7 in 2000, and you can only get a 4x4 with a 5.9 if it is a four door. Get the 3.92's you will be glad you did. The gas mileage is about the same, and the truck will have a lot more power. To save an arguement, I said "about" the same mileage. Somebody will argue about that, so I will just say I am not argueing about it beforehand. As for transmissions, It has to be a standard shift for me, and I know nothing about the autos, except that I don't like them.

Thanks for the help guys. What about the differences b/t the 4 speed and 5 speed auto? Is it only in the mpg? Thanks!

The 4.7 and 5.2 are almost identical in power so go with the 4.7 anyway.
