I have a 2000 4.7 with an auto. Ive read before that its common for the auto to shift sloppy between 2nd and 3rd. As mine does. Why is this and is there a solution?

I have a 5speed auto with 4.7. I have to concentrate extremely hard to feel it shift at all 99% of the time.

The Torque Management is partly responsible for that. Mine shifts fair when on the throttle heavy.
The two Chryslers we have are the first I've driven that reduced engine power during shifts. It kind of sucks for performance, but I guess it may start to save some tranny's. Our 98 is getting close to 100k miles. No tranny problems yet. It's fully electronic like our new 5-45RFE. On our '98, I also did the Torque management mod. I installed a switch inline to prevent the signal that comes from the TCM to the PCM. It will then shift under full power when I flip the switch OFF. Works great. It can't be done on 2003+ Dakota's tho.

One thing that DOES suck (only when trying to RACE) is when say you're doing 30 MPH and your buddy (or some Ricer wanna be) next to you hits it and you want to junp on it. Our tranny's will not jump from 3rd gear all the way down to 1st gear and take off like tranny's of old (100% valve body controlled). No. Our tranny will drop in 2nd, THEN drop in 1st. Giving a delay before you can bring on the true power. This is one time where a 5 speed stick must make the 4.7 come alive.

Anyone else notice also that sometimes if you drive gently for an extended period of time, then try to get on it fast, maybe in a tough merging situation, sometimes the tranny will still be in the gentle learning mode and won't give you the double downshift you're looking for?

There's actually a TSB for this problem and the cure is to have the TCM and PCM flashed at the dealer to the latest code version. It will also turn your 45rfe into a 545rfe or a 5 speed auto ( 6 if you count 2nd gear prime).

I have also noticed the sloppy second to third shift. A search on this forum for "rough shift" turns up several interesting threads. Others with the 45RFE have the same experience. It is subtle in my truck, so I think I'll just keep an eye on it for now.

I would be curious to know if anyone has had this develop into worse problems?
