I was wondering if anyone knew what size tap I should use for the holes around the plastic shroud below the oil filter. I would like to tap each hole so I can bolt the cover on. This way I can take it off and replace it each time I change the oil. I haven't pulled the cover off yet incase I don't have the right size tap. Any help would be appreciated.

This is not the answer you are looking for, but it may be of use. On the 2000 4.7L 4x4 I just purchased, a previous owner cut a hole in the plastic shroud for access to the filter. I changed to oil last night and found the hole to work well (it is about 7" square, looks to have been cut with a jigsaw). I put a plastic bag over the filter and spun the filter off. No spilled oil.

However, I don't know how well I like the idea of an open hole in that shroud. So I'm thinking about cutting a piece of black plastic to cover the hole. I would cut the piece oversize and use sheet metal screws to attach it to the existing shroud.

On the other hand, I do not see excessive "road grime" up inside the currently exposed hole. So maybe I'll just leave it that way.

FWIW.

Chris,

What I did instead of tapping the holes was to go to the local body repair shop and find different plastic mounting pins. They had drawers of different kinds and we looked until we found one that fit(I had to enlarge the holes in the plastic but not the frame). It was a simple push pin that could be pulled out for release instead of having to be destroyed to remove.

If you go true offroading more than 4 times a year then go ahead and cut a hole or find some way around it.

If you only go true offroading a couple times a year, take the damn thing off and only put it on when you go offroading. Its a matter of how many times you change your oil vs how many times you go offroading.

If you never get on any surface more agressive than a dirt road, then you're fooling yourself and just take the damn thing off and store it away until you sell the truck.
