I have a 92 Dakota x-cab V8 auto w/overdrive. The problem I'm having is it stalls. I just had it aligned and started the problem on the way off the rack.I checked for pinched wires but found none. Symptoms are when brake pedal is depressed in any gear or park sometimes it stalls. At the same time the fuel gauge drops to empty, even though full. Let off the brake it returns to normal. I pulled the fuse for brake lights now that symptom is gone. If it is put in reverse it will die. I managed to drive it home with the fuse out and push it out of the parking spot.It ran fairly well with full power home. While driving I did notice the fuel gauge drop off intermittently, but the ngine did not falter. I have tried to clean the battery cables and grounds, which often cause strange problems. Recently the neutral switch was replaced but has run normally since. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also have a great holiday.

try the speed sensor-it tells the computer how fast and when you come to a stop and/or slow down and conversates the idle speed when you put the truck in gear and slow down-check the plug-in and the wires on the sensor

plus you may have a vaccuum leak on the brake booster or vaccuum leak some where else thats causing it to stall when the brake is applied requiring more vaccuum-take a vaccuum check and apply the brake to see if the vaccuum drops off

Thanks for the thoughts. I don't think the speed sensor is it because you don't have to be moving to have the problem or even the brake. Just putting it in reverse will do it.I keep thinking it is electrical in nature because of the fuel gauge fluctuation. We did replace the speed sensor couple of months ago because we noticed the overdrive and cruise did not work. Keep the ideas coming we're trying to head out on a 1000 mile trip on saturday. We are quite mechanically inclined as well as on electrical but it sure helps to bounce things off others.

run the codes and see if the speed sensor comes up,

i,ve had this same problem with a 88 dak
when you put it in gear it wanted to stall and when you came to a stop

ran the codes-speed sensor came up-the wires got on the exshaust pipe and burnt, also check the plug in for contact [corrosion]

As we worked on it over the week end we noticed when the key was on and moved shift lever through gears the fuel gauge would drop off radio lights flashed on also the tail lights came on. Checked plug at computer and back of fuse block. At times it would not start at all. Had spark at all times. At this point would think fuel pump, but that should not have anything to do with the gauge, radio and tail lights coming on. Checked neutral switch and even disconnected and still stalled and fuel gauge drops off every time it happens. Still sounds like a ground but where? Checked the ones under hood and near computer. Almost thinking computer problem? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

it sounds like a problem in or around the column,
check the wiring there and under the hood.

does the truck have tilt,i,ve seen problems with wires getting pinched where the column tilts.

also check the grounds around the driverside kick panel/maybe behind kick panel.

i had a 88 dak, when you turn the lights on the dash lights would,nt come on,the gauges would all go up,the signal lights in the dash both would come on,and the high beam indercator light would come on when on low beam.
the grounds behind the kick panel[theirs several that in one spot]was the problem. this may be the problem with your radio and gauge

not sure on stalling, but if your getting fire and it won,t start then it sound like fuel,
fuel pump, wires at pump[top of tank],fuel regulator, fuel filter etc.try cycling the key on with someone by the tank listening for the pump.
the pump will only run a few seconds each cycle .
or check the pressure at the fuel rail.watch your face because there should be about 45lbs

hope this helps and good luck
