Subject: Problem with my truck
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1998 Dodge Dakota 4x4, 5.2L V-8.

The problem started yesterday. I drove to work in the morning and all was well with my truck. But upon going out to lunch, first thing I noticed when starting up the engine is that it was idling VERY rough, and making some odd noises, like air "whoosing" out of something. As I drove about a mile away the check engine light came on briefly and then went out.
I also noticed a loss of power at higher RPMS. The ride home was very rough.

Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Sounds like a major vacuum leak. check under the hood for any loose hoses. You can make a bottle of soapy water and spray it around the area where you here the noise. If you see or here bubbles or a gurgling sound you may find the problem.
Hope this helps
P.S. some people use starter fluid for this ,but that can be risky i.e BOOM!!

Bad cat maybe? That would explain the high rpm power loss.

The first vacuum leak I look for with a Magnum (after the obvious loose vacuum line) is that bonehead award winner, otherwise known as the intake belly pan gasket. The intake must be removed to replace the gasket. The group that came up with this thing must've been the same bunch of total idiots responsible for the self-destructing overdrives. Anyway, look down into the throttle body (use a good flashlight). If the gasket is bad, the floor of the intake will be sooty/oily looking (usually). If you don't have a vacuum line flapping in the breeze, I'd suspect the intake.

I had a similar problem with my 5.9 recently... and as gen1dak said, it was the plenum or, also called, belly pan gasket. It's a bitch to fix yourself if your not familliar.... and it's gonna cost you a few bucks to have it done.... best bet, get a diagnostic done at your local dodge dealership.

If that's your problem and if you want to do it yourself download this doc:

Hope this helps.

Well I looked over the engine on Sunday very briefly, had to leave as we had family obligations. Today after reading your posts I went back out and inspected everything thoroughly. I could not find any problems.
I did replace the 10" round K&N filter setup I was using with another K&N intake kit I had.
Started up my truck and the engine sounded just fine. Took it down to the gas station as I was almost out and it drove great. It appears the problem it was having simply vanished. Which makes me rather nervous as I imagine it could just pop up again.
The check engine light remains on, I suspect it will until I get a dealer to clear that?

I was thinking of running down to the local autoparts store and picking up a Diagnostic Scan tool to see what the problem was and clear that check engine light. What do you think?
