Subject: REAL gas mileage

OK folks let's have it for real. Not what the EPA says you're supposed to get, not what the overhead console says, not what you see everyone else says the average is supposed to be. Gimme real world mileage. I honestly don't care and have no complaints, but just want to hear what otehrs are getting using the following criteria or close to it.

I do mine from when the trigger on the gas pump clicks until 20-30 miles after the light goes on. Fill back up until the first or second click, divide miles on trip odometer by number of gallons it took to fill the tank.

Last couple tanks with heavy throttle in Winter with 60%city/40%highway, plenty of open throttle: 11.8-11.9.

This last tank when I was extremely light on the peday, same mix of highyway/city: 13.89.

Back when it was warm 15-16 in equal mix, high 16s with mostly highway.

04 Quad Cab V8 4x4, a little over 3 thousamd miles so far.

I have to laugh at the so-called progress of our vehicles. My '89 Dak with stock 318 averaged 16mpg in combined driving with lots of hard leaves and a tranny that was never 100% for very long. Compared to my previous ride, a 318-powered '69 Charger, it was a pig. The Charger got 19mpg with the same driving style, and it'd eat that Dak up. Yes, the Dak had emissions stuff, but I seriously doubt high flow cats would do that much damage. Now, while the SMPI Daks have more power, it's due to the better flowing heads, and the mileage still sucks.

My mix is about 70% highway and 30% city. I get about 16.8 when I drive "normal" and I get get to just under 18 when I baby it.

I have a QC with the 4.7L auto tranny 4x4. I only have 6k miles on it so my data is relatively useless so far. When it was warmed my vehicle still wasn't broke in (like yours still isn't) so it was about the same. I don't really care either as I like my truck and realized going in that a V8 4x4 with the extra weight of the QC wasn't going to be ultimately gas friendly anyway...

My DAK is a 2000 4.7 QC 2WD auto. I get mid 16's in town and 19,20ish on the road. Real world figures. I have installed a K&N fipk and had the PCM reflashed. When I bought this truck I went in with the understanding that it was the only V8 truck in it's class (small)and thats why I wanted one in first place.I knew that it would not get mileage like my ford ranger did. But then that V6 ranger wouldnt hold a candle to this V8 truck. I dont know why people want to get a vehicle that has more power than any in its class and GRIPE because it will not get 30 MPG. SO, if you want high MPGs go get a 4 cyl that can't get out of it's own way.

sorry about the soap box griping!!
but hope you enjoy your DAK as much as I do mine . BAD MPGs and all.

My results are almost identical to yours. With about 40% highway and 60% city driving, some hard starts from time to time (this is totally subjective), I average 11.5. In warmer weather, I average 13.3 with the same driving. I have NEVER gotten a detailed account of any mileage better than 13.9. One time, in band camp, my family took a drive through the mountains towards Sun Valley, Idaho, and drove 303 miles roundtrip before I even hit reserve. I estimated that we got around 17 mpg, but that was so freakish that I can't even consider it as data.

I have a 2wd reg cab 98 dak with a 318 a 5-speed and 3.92 gears the best I have ever gotten was 10.8 mpg, but thats not why we buy these v8's, we buy them because we like all the power. Also gen1dak I find it hard to believe u have an 89 with a stock 318 since the 318 didn't come stock until 91....weird. Nice try though.

I have a '95 318 Magnum. I get about 16-18mpg city (90%-95% of my driving) and if I go highway I get around 20-23mpg. You guys really should do the basic upgrades to improve your mileage and power, unless you've installed ram air or turbos or something.

First off, I really dislike the annoying people who say, "you shouldn't buy a V-8 if you care about gas mileage". That's crap. There are plenty of V-8 trucks getting 18 - 22 mpg consistantly.

My EPA was suppose to be 16 - 19 mpg on the sticker when I bought this truck new and I've never gotten that kind of mileage. When it was brand new, I got 15 - 16 mpg very rarely and that disappeared before I had 10,000 miles on the truck.

Currently in the City I get 11 mpg and on the freeway I get 14 mpg. Stock 318 with K&N Filter, 4x4, Gibson Exhaust, 3:55 gears, automatic trans, 32 inch tires. 101,750 miles. Total gas HOG in my opinion. My old 64 1/2 V-8 mustang got better gas mileage than this truck.

I should point out that I have the towing package on my QC, which has the 3.92 gears. So, I may never get high teens with my mileage. But, any improvement is good on this truck.
Shortly, I want to upgrade to an AirRaid intake system which I hear helps improve mileage and power. I also have some headers I need to install when I'm ready to complete my entire exhaust upgrade. Both of these should help improve mileage, I hope :)

I have a 2002 4.7L QC 4x4 with 16K miles and drive approximately 70% highway/30% city. I average 17.5 - 18.5. The lowest was 16.5 in the winter through snow in 4 high for 50 miles. I do drive pretty easy with the RPMs never above 3000. I've always used snythetic motor oil, but I'm not sure that makes any difference.

And I really dislike the annoying people who buy V8 4wd pickups because they're poseurs and then whine about the inherent drawbacks in such a vehicle when they find how expensive it is to look cool.

"you shouldn't buy a V-8 if you care about gas mileage". That's crap. There are plenty of V-8 trucks getting 18 - 22 mpg consistantly."

HOw do you know? Probably, as with most people who make this argument, youre comparing window stickers instead of real world estimates. MAybe in a regular cab rwd full size truck you could be talking high teens, but if you're comparing a full sized extended cab to a Dakota Quad, you're gonna find the full sized is about the same give or take 1mpg.

"My EPA was suppose to be 16 - 19 mpg on the sticker when I bought this truck new and I've never gotten that kind of mileage. When it was brand new, I got 15 - 16 mpg very rarely and that disappeared before I had 10,000 miles on the truck."

Your EPA was not SUPPOSED to be 16-19. Im not really trying to get into this argument again, but here we go again with somebody else who only paid attention to the two big bold numbers and ignored the rest of the window sticker that explains these are only EPA test results in a controlled environment, and real world mileage varies with conditions.

"Currently in the City I get 11 mpg and on the freeway I get 14 mpg. "

So? My 4 cylinder Ranger got much better mileage than my Dakota.

'02 QC 4.7 Auto AWD, MagnaFlow Single in Dual Out, Redline Synthetic in both Diffs - currently 19.3 mpg back and forth to work (38 miles -- 70% hiway/30% city). My tankful calcs from the pump and odometer usually match the overhead right on; 14.5 when it's mostly city miles through a tank. Mine seems to drop about a half mile per gallon from summer to winter in western PA. Best milage yet was a trip from Cleveland to Pittsburgh -- 24.6 mpg. Very happy with this aspect of my truck, as my previous truck ('94 Splash Ext Cab 4x4 4.0L Manual) got about 15% better mileage, but was slightly underpowered. Too bad this Dodge breaks down every two weeks; the Ranger may have had less power and room, but the thing never broke down. Maybe the new F150?????

I track my mileage very carefully, more info at:
http://www.blueoceanpress.com/~storage/truck/index.html
80% towing a 16 foot boat and 20% city mix - I've never seen 14MPG :( and do NOT hot foot it around town (too many cops)!

If the EPA sticker says 14-19 I think the truck should atleast get the lower number around town, but in 23K miles I've yet to see it.

You only buy a v8 for one reason--You like power. if you buy one for gas mileage you are a retard. you want a v8 and good mileage?????put 2.56 gears in it, and quit bitching about it. If you bought your truck without knowing the "true" mileage...You didn't do your homework. Eddy was asking a question, he did not care if you feel you should get better mileage than you do, he was asking what mileage you DO get. You think Your mileage sucks? well I think it is pretty damn average for a midsized v8. I personally get 11-hw, and 9-city with mine, so be happy with your 14.
