Well, I'm finally getting my exhaust installed as a Christmas Present from my younger brother the Marine :D! I'm looking at a series70 Flowmaster, single-in dual-out 2.25" pipes, and chrome-tipped pipes straight out beside my Reese-Hitch. This is with the Magnum 318. Any comments on such a config? Also, what size is the stock exhaust-pipe behind the cat on the Dak? I'm hioping it's already 2.25".

It will be louder. But with the stock head pipe and cats I doubt you'll pick up enough power to matter.

Alright, I heard bad things happen if you change anything between the engine and the cat without serious modification to other parts of the truck and/or computer. Is this true? If not, I can get new manifolds and everything. Then I'd have true dual exhaust, but I don't want to do that if increasing the airflow out of the engine will cause other problems. I need to know ASAP so I can tell my brother what to order.

Do you have any other mods done to your truck? Are you planning to do any? If not the set up that you are planning should work out just fine. The stock exhaust is 2.5, dual 2.25 coming out the back sounds like a good combo. Most people claim that sticking with a single pipe yields a little bit better performance. That is unless you are going to a true dual exhaust. On the other hand, dual exhaust sure looks good.

I've got a cotton air-filter, Tornado Air, Bosch Platinum 4 plugs, low-resistance wires, AMSOIL, full-flow racing oil-filter (K&N), I switched the 195deg thermo for a 180deg thermo, and I switched from the green coolant to the orange coolant. That's about it off the top of my head. So would doing true dual be a better idea? If so, would a smaller pipe size be needed??

Dude, I just found out that going true-dual is illegal here. It f*cking sucks!! Apparently, when I go for my inspection, something in my computer could tell them that something was modified and if they saw true-dual tehy'd fail me, even if I had a cat on both pipes. Now I don't mean any disrespect here, but WHAT THE F***?!?!?! I mean because I'd have one pipe for each side of the engine I'd need two new cats, ones designed for the right amount of back-pressure or whatever, but as long as both pipes had sensors and all, why the hell would it be illegal? Can somebody explain this because it pisses me off to know that I can't do a long-awaited mod without taking my plates off and parking it.

Sephiroth,

I believe the problem is in the O2 sensor system. If there were 2 devices to the existing assembly, you could put on on each bank. With only one sensor on a true dual it becomes emmissions non-compliant. In reality, true duals need an h-pipe (crossover pipe) to scavange properly, so a good header system into a single cat into duals (or a single pipe) will probably work just dandy for street use. Remember the old rule with exhaust: The bigger the size, the higher the rpm benefit and the greater the low-end loss. If you aren't going to be street racer always and forever and want a good sound, 1-1/2" to 1-5/8" primary tubes on a header and 2X2-1/2" or 1-3" exhaust should give descent performance without hurting your lower rpm (torque) too much.

Or, it sounds like what you have in mind will be fine and set you up for future improvements,...

Yeah I know the O2 would have to be added so each pipe would have one, but isn't there a way to do that legally? Heck, my friend John has an '87 Jag VP. It has three cats on it! One behind the engine, and one on each of the two exhaust-pipes. That car you can NOT hear until you're right up beside it in a quiet room. If I owned a car, I'd DEFINATLY want an '87 or prior year Jag. You know, one of the REAL Jags using the airplane engines, not these new slow ones with tiny V8s.

Sephiroth,

No, there's no way to add another O2 sensor as the computer is only designed to read one. (You'd have to design a system whereby the electronic characteristics of multiple sensors would mirror the input information of a single device. The research would be interesting. Does the sensor work on a mA or resistance base? Goodies like that.) As to the sound level of your rig: The modern cat has almost no effect on sound level. The muffler is what performs the sound dampening function. Your comment on the Jag's quietness is the muffler system. It is designed for absolute quiet, as most people who purchase a car of that ilk aren't looking to impress the folks beside them with sound. [It is the car's status and breeding, not the noise, just like a Caddie, Lexus, BMW &tc.]. Oh by the way, the engine in even older Jags is not an aircraft engine. No way the drivetrain in the '76 XJS I owned would be wanted by ANYONE in a plane. Too unreliable. Also, despite Ford now owning Jaguar, the XJS is a rather quick car.

Enjoy your rig-nice mellow sound adds to the fun,...
