Anybody in here have a high stall converter? If so what brand? Whats the stall size you are running? Anybody tried out the PI viper? Oh and what did you gain in the 1/4 from the converter?

I have a 2000 Dakota R/T with a few mods including the Presision industries Viper converter.In my truck it flashes at 2650 rpm,drivabilty has not suffered at all in my eyes,gas mileage went down a bit,it made it fun to drive,traction on the radials has suffered big time.As for 1/4 mile gain,well it was about 1 to 2 tenths at best considering that traction has got so bad,I am going to be purchasing slicks in a month or two,and I believe that is when the true gain from the converter will show up.But my R/T is faster than most other equally modded R/T's that I have seen,and after haviing this converter,I dont know how I ever lived without it.Hope this helps.

What is a high stall converter. I'm guessing from what you posted that it helps you get more hp to the tires faster since BH-R/T said that he lost traction. Whats something like that cost? Whats the pros and cons? Is this something I could use on a 4x4?

Explaining a stall converter is not easy,but I will give it a try....when you are sitting at a dead stop and you mash the peddle to the floor the torque converter slips to a set stall (or rpm).Stock converter stall rpm is usually about 1600 rpm,this is when it stops slipping and grabs which in turn puts the engine under a harder strain starting at the low rpm.If you install a higher stall (rpm) converter,when you mash the peddle the it will slip to lets say 2600 rpm then grab,the engine is making alot more power and torque at 2600 rpm than it is at 1600.So sitting at idle then mashing the gas you can watch the rpms slam up to 2600 faster than you can say wiplash!Then your off,you can also hold the brake a push the gas down a little(stalling the converter) and not spin the tires,mine stalls to 2600,but as soon as I let off the brake peddle and mash the gas,the tires go up in smoke.With the stock converter if I did the stall test as soon as I got to 1600 rpm the tires would just start spinning.Basically it gets your engine into its power band alot faster.I have seen other R/T's run with the stock converter and slicks run in the 1/4 mile,then change to a higher stall converter and run again with slicks and gain about 2 to 4 tenths in the 1/4 mile.The unit I have costs about $800.00,but it is the most expensive.As for installing one in a 4x4,I dont see why not,wouldnt hurt,just wouldnt recommend a higher stall converter for anybody who tows with their truck,it would slip too much and create ALOT of heat in the tranny,not good.I cant really think of any other way of explaining this,once again I hope this helps.

BH-R/T you mean its a Viper converter out of the sports car? So I just call my Dodge dealer and ask for a stall converter out of the Viper?

Vipers are 6 speed manuals(no converter). PI makes the converter he is refering to they just call it the viper. The site is www.converter.com

heavy duty package...is this the same thing
you guys are talkin about? So far all I know it
does is adjust the idle, so you can sit up hill
w/o holding the brakes, and if you are towing,
it transfers more torque when going up hill???

Mike D - there is no actual torque gain - just extra slippage until your revs come up into the powerband. This gets you into the meat of the powerband faster. High stall converters work best with bigger cams, controlling low rpm bogging; and low (higher numerical) rear end ratios. Ideally the lock up speed should be below your usual cruising rpm's or the slippage will be adding to the heat generated by the tranny. Definitely run a tranny cooler.

All automatics have a torque converter, and the stock converter is the same regardless of what options you get, the R/T converter is the same as the others, a towing or HD service group does not change the torque converter, at least on Dakotas. All R/Ts have the 46RE transmission.

The torque converter is part of the transmission so it really doesn't effect what the motor puts out. It does effect what goes to the rear wheels so I guess a smaller lighter (which also is higher stall) converter would help get the whole mass spun up faster. By stalling at 2500 rpm it does seem like there is more torque because the engine is making more torque at 2500 rpm then it is at 1600 rpm where the stocker stalls. The stock converter can be modifided by the right people to stall at a higher speed but it seems simiplier to pay the $190 for the new high stall converter (the "viper" one is more like $800 I think). The torque converter is named for what it does. Convert torque..... This occurs on the line as a result of the stator (or reactor) multiplying your torque in. Once the stator is in time with the turbine the converter becomes a simple fluid coupler. The smaller the impeller, the easier the unit will build stall math. The larger the impeller, the more efficient it is in mid range and on topend. This is where the performance converter manufacture must balance finished math with overall efficiency.
Not all converters were created equal in the Daks. The RT has a higher stall impeller and slightly more torque multiplication off the line then other V-8‘s. The V-6 has the higher pitched stator and the 4x4 HD has a lower stall unit then the 2wd
Beware of the cheap stall converter on the street. Many lower priced units are simply set up for increased "flash stall" and will only build more heat on the street.
In drag racing application your 60ft times are critical, but for everyday driving or the street / strip compromise there is more to life then the first 60 feet!

Does a standard A518 come with a lockup or non-lock up in it. If it is the later, can a lock up be used. I have a 79 dodge D150 that has the 318 in it and Im considering changing the trans to a A518. Thanks

The a518 is a "lock Up" over drive transmission.

Dodge built vary few non lock 518's for heavy duty, industrial application life aircraft tugs and severe duty towing.
