I was shopping around for a used Dakota (still a student so I couldnt afford new). I wanted a v8, but after searching all of the dealerships around me I determined only a v6 could be afforded. I made my way one sunday to the dodge dealership right down the street from where I lived. My father has bought a few cars from them, some good deals, and some just walk away. I was first attracted to a 2000 Dakota V6 with power everything. It was a 2 tone job, with the large tires. The only thing it did not have was the onboard computer. Well, I milled around on it a few days until one day the sales man called me and told me they had something even closer to what i wanted. I went back to the dealership and low and behold that had a 1999 Dakota v8 Loaded with the onboard computer. It was a year older that the other, but this was an SLT solid color with the 3.55 rear. And, get this it was $1500 less that the 2000 V6. It had aprox. 3500 more miles than the 2000. I still walked away from that dealership with my new truck for around $9500.

when i was i highschool i used to go out at lunch or spare and test drive cars and trucks. I came across a dakota with white racing stripes that i thought would do a good brake burn, it did. I never took it back, i dropped of a certified cheque that afternoon. no more racing stripes though, history...

I spent a long time looking for just the package I wanted. Apparently, there aren't many 4.7 Quad Cab 4x4s around. Finally, I talked to a dealer 125 miles away ( boooo!! - the only thing I'm not jazzed about with the new truck) and told them what I was looking for, what I wanted to pay for how long, etc, etc. They got back to me with something very close. It wasn't until I drove down to test drive it that I found out they marked it down almost $6000 from the asking price! $6000! I had no idea they had that much flexibility in pricing. My new truck also came from the dealer with a new spray-in bedliner - something I wanted anyway. If you ask me, that's stinkin cool.

Two stories: In 1999, I wanted a loaded V8 4x4. Spent some time, finally found one at a nearby AutoNation (don't get me started on these roaches). 76K miles - too many, but the truck was gorgeous, including a rare faux wood trim on the dash. Love the truck, but dropped $2000 at least into the front end - idler arm, stablizer bar, shocks, 9 alignments, ball joints, pittman arm. All done now, runs and looks great at 141k.

Having said that, I'm currently looking at an '00, similarly equipped, EXACT same color scheme (silver w/ chrome)...power options, with only 11,000 miles, priced right. I'm hopelessly mired in negative equity now, but riding it all out on a practically new (miles-wise) truck may make sense. My current rig won't be paid for until about 190K.

Wifey and I are discussing....

My step father originally purchased my Dak to tow his boat with. He loved and pampered the truck for 3 years and then sold the boat. The truck stayed with him 1 more year and then he let me buy it off him.

I got a good deal on a great truck.

I had a 99 club cab with the 3.9 (and it was paid for!!) but i was halfway looking for a truck with more power and interior room. I went to the dealer to get the emergency brake cable replaced (it had broken). On the lot was a 2001 quad cab with the 4.7. I then made my first mistake... I asked the salesman to let me look inside and it had all of the options i had ordered on the 99 plus the overhead trip computer. this led to my second mistake I asked for a test drive of course the dealer said yes. Well the third mistake occured when i asked what kind of deal they could work out on it. So to make a short story long I drove in with a 99 3.9 5 speed with a broken emergency brake cable and drove out in a 2001 quad cab with a 4.7 and a 5 speed. That has got to be the biggest impulse buy i have ever made plus I now have the joy of truck payments. but other than that I LOVE this truck.

Well I get 5 day weekends from work every 2 weeks. And, well, alot can happy in 5 days.

Thursday night: hearing on the internet from people who got incredible deals on 2003 leftover F150s because the redesigned model years are out. Co workers were telling me NOW was the time to buy, not December. There were already slim pickings on the 03s and people were snapping them up so fast theyd probly be gone by the end of November. Decided the next day I was gonna go out and buy a new truck.

Friday: Tried two different Ford dealers but alas, seemed like Id waited too long to get the deal of the century. Each Ford dealer seemed to have only 1-2 F series trucks like I wanted on their lots, if that. And they knew the supply had gotten so low they'd get somebody who preferred the old body style over the new to come along and snap up the 03s at some point without having to go too far below cost, so there was no longer any wisdom in going too deep into their pockets to let one go.

First dealer was nice enough guy, but didn't seem to get the message I wanted power windows and power locks. Kept locating trucks without those options for me instead of just telling me I for what I was willing to pay I needed to look at a different vehicle.

Second dealer had one silve loaded extended cab on the lot. Played the 'i gotta talk to the manager' game, jogging back and fourth to the raised manager's podium to get the price down like 6 times in about two minutes. Within those two minutes he came down like 4 grand and got annoyed because he claimed he was in my price range and I still wasn't biting, and I had to explain to him that he was only counting the amount financed, not my downpayment.

Finally got frustrated, went across the street to the Dodge dealer. Told them what I wanted to pay for a Quad cab. They said that would be easier on an 03 with double the rebates. But they only found one 300 miles away that they didn't want to go get. I told them give me that dealer's name and number, Ill buy from him and go pick the truck up. They instantly gave me almost two grand in my trade to make up for the 2 grand in rebates I was missing out on by not getting an 03. They had several similarly equipped trucks on the lot. They took me out and had me pick a color and I drove him in my Quad cab that night.

After 5 years in a regular cab truck it's VERY strange to be driving and hear voices of passengers come from behind me.

My first Dak story started in Jan.'93. I had owned Dodge vans up to that point, a '77 B-100 w/318, and a '85 Mini Ram Van w/2.2 5-spd. The mini-van wouldn't fall off a hill. To climb Jellico Mtn. on the Ky/Tn border on I-75, I would have to run 4th gear up to 65mph, shift, and bog to 55mph and start over THREE TIMES just to cross the mountain! I got to craving a 318 again, and test drove a left-over 1992 Dakota Sport RC 5.2 w/3:55 auto. The first time I punched it was on a long uphill entrance ramp to I-75 in Knoxville. I was sold in an instant. I still made the salesman squirm through 6 price negotiations. I had my baby for 8 1/2 years, until she was totalled by a woman blasting through a "wave-through" in the right lane in a '95 T-Bird. With 217K on the clock, the Dak was an easy total. No local dealer had a RC/V-8/bucket seats, so I poked around on dodge.com a few hours one night, and found my '01 RC 4.7 3:92LSD 5-spd 100 miles away. It was black (always avoided before), with black wheels and yellow letter tires (nothing like old blue's Centerlines); a Dodge Motorsports Limited Edition. Once again, the test drive did me in! The manual-tranny V-8 vehicle I never had in high school was here. I later found out that only 1028 of these "NASCAR" editions were made, and only 13 black RC's with my Dak's specs. Oh yeah, I leveraged free fender flares by showing an internet quote from another dealer on a red Motorsports. I made the deposit on 9/8/2001, and gritted my teeth and bought it on 9/15/2001: everybody remembers THAT week. Two weeks later, I could have had a 7yr/100K warranty instead of 3/36. Helping the USA at the time felt good, though.

I always wanted a GenIII dakota but the pricetag always was semi intimidating since they retain value pretty well. We found wrecked 2001 QC SLT 4x4 5.9L at a salvage yard in tenessee. It was a roll over. This same yard had a cab, 3 doors and a box off a wrecked QC they sold me with the truck.

Was pleasantly suprised when the truck was delivered. 3.55 rearend, LSD, all leather interior, overhead console, Infinity sound system, Bedliner, 5.9L with 36,000 miles total, etc. So to make a long story short, I ended up with a sweet ride for just about $11,000. Aside from the R-title, this truck is mint. I will probably never own a vehicle as nice and loaded as this ever again in my life. Sometimes its just good to be lucky. Just happened to stumble across it on the internet one day.

my dad gave me his old truck when I turned 16 it is a 93 Dakota 5.2 ext cab 2 wheel drive LE markIII edition with power everything and leather seats. I done alittle work to it and had it running 14's. Then I got tired of putting about $30 of gas in it at least once a week so I started looking for a newer model dakota. I stubbled upon a used 2001 R/T with 40,000 miles I paid 10k for it. Pretty good deal. I am planning on doing alittle work to it this spring and hopefully it will have about 400rwhp. I still have my 93 but trying to sale it if anyones interested email me at skeener@dnet.net

Y'all have some nice stories. You're working too hard to find the truck of your dreams. I live in FL. It really hot here and NO fun to stand out on
hot pavement in high humidity to play stupid games
with salepeople. I bought my 01QC with exactly all the options and the color I wanted. It took me
5 hours at home on my PC. If you use the "Search inventory" feature on the Dodge website, you can
see exactly what is on a dealer's lot. I searched the whole state of FL, found my truck about 3hrs away in South Florida. The best feature of the searh function is that you can see the exact window sticker as if you were standing on the lot. Went down there with my own financing (blankk credit union check) and made a great deal happen. You guys up in the cold dark North might
give this a try during the winter. Sure beats driving around to all the dealer lots!!

I said, "on dodge.com a few hours" in my story; actually it was four. I'm confused, 01redR/T; if you didn't like the '93 5.2 gas mileage, why did you look for an R/T?
