Message:
I just bought a 2000 4x4 4.7 w/ 20k miles on it.
A day after I got it, I noticed oil spots on the driveway and investigation found that there was heaps of oil in on the skid plate.
I am assuming the Dodge dealer that changed the oil was not careful when changing the oil and it leaked all over the skid plate.
Anyway, my question is: when I get 3k miles and have to change my oil, does anybody have any advise on how not to get oil all over the skid plate? Also, is the skid plate easy to remove and clean???

The skid plates on the 4x4 can be a pain in the butt when changing oil. After allowing oil to get into mine the first time, I took a plastic gallon water/milk jug and cut the top third off. I then trimmed the top to fit between the skid plate and the oil drain plug. Kind of like a splash guard.

The skid plates are easy to remove. Six bolts total for the 2 plates (2 bolts are shared). But I find that the splash guard thing is easier then removing the plates for an oil change.

kragens has a quick disconnect kit that you replace the oil drain plug with and then you attach a hose to it that goes lower than the skid plates and into the drain pan. when done just disconnect hose.

Thanks for the advise. I'll try the plastic bottle trick and see how it goes.

...or a big ol' ziplock bag, if you don't have any 2 litre bottles around.
