Mine has 3. 1 on each exhaust manifold, and the third is inline before the muffler. From what I read not all daks have 3

I think the precats and the bends in the y pipe are the real bottleneck.

For 2000, just the trucks for states with tougher emissions laws got the three cat set up.

If you have your window sticker look on it to see if anywhere it reads (CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS)
If it does you have 3 converters. I live on the east cost but my truck is set up for the California emissions for some reason. Wish they would have kept it in california !!! (The converters not the truck)

Then why don't you just pull the third cat and gain the 5 hp back ? Which state, Blowen blu ? If Mass., you're safe.

Hey what if you just had some muffler shop make 2 1/2 inch Y pipe instead of the pea shooter thats there now. My dakota has small y pipes. it only gets to 2 1/2 inch on the straight part right before the 3rd cat. I know in California if you mess with ANY of the smog equipment theyll pretty much hang you from a lamp post.
A buddy of mine said he used to go to muffler shops and have them make him a test pipe that bolted on and off the exhaust so he could remove it and reinstall the cat when he had to go for a smog.
Not sure if muffler shops still do that.
anyone know the cost of the mini cats my the manifolds? I called the dealer and the guy just said theire expensive.

Black2003 - while Blowen Blu's statement is technically correct, I've never had a visual inspection done by a tester. I asked some questions when I noticed my 3 1/2 year old truck was never given the sniffer test and learned emissions testing is now being done through the obdii port for newer vehicle that have obdii. Tester will check dash light for proper operation, and not check further unless prompted by the computer. Then they would plug into the port to look for a recently reset or codes. (If light is on, they'll look for codes and you won't pass). He said mine may not be flagged for testing due to low miles (31,000) and computer may select some vehicles randomly. But since there are no sensors by the third cat, there will be no codes, so we should be pretty safe. I heard there were 17 states testing this way, with more to follow, but I don't have a list of them.

thanks for the reply kowalski? Now just one more thing. Is there anything to gain by cutting off the third cat? I heard it makes it sound a little deeper. How about gas mileage and performance though?

Removing the third cat does change the tone of the exhaust to a deeper note, and it also slightly leans out the vehicle over the stock setup (at least mine showed this on the dyno). Running slightly leaner actually improved my power and increased gas mileage ever so slightly. I also went to a true dual setup when I removed the third cat, so that also had a contributing factor to all the above mentioned...
