Some of the newbies might enjoy this old HO cams post. I'm going to dyno my '01 soon. Is 1 to 1 third gear or fourth on NV3500?

Thanks, Bill. I hope biz is good. Do you know a source that powder coats 4.7 magnesium valve covers via core set swap?

01 Motorsport,

I have an 01, with the manual (NV3500)

You may remember my posts years ago when I dynoed.

I dynoed my HO cams, and other minor mods.

I'm interested to see if your RW can match mine.

Do you have the two piece drive shaft? I do, I have the QC.

Texas Todd, I have an RC with a single driveshaft. My '01 4.7 5-spd 3:92LSD has the 9.25" rear end like the old R/T's. Did your QC come with 9.25"? I wonder if the manual tranny 4.7 Daks had that rear end only with 3:92 gear? Was the Superchips mod worthwhile, IYO, Todd?

01Moto,

Yes, my 01 has the 9.25 LSD rear end. ( still posi's on burn outs, etc)

However, I ordered my truck with among other things, the 3.55 gears. You can order any gears you want.

My dyno's were all with the 3.55's.

Then I had the 3.92's put in. IMHO, the 3.92's make the 1st TOO short on the nv3500. So then I got a new set of tires ( it was time), that's about an inch taller, which made some of it back.

The SuperChips mod is OK, but after I had HO cams, HO intake, HOmebrew true cold air intake, ported my 68mm TB, no third cat, etc., my max on perf setting, with premium, was only a total of 8hp gain from non SC's, same conditions.

Someone posted a 4.7, that got 13 hp. but my non superchips RWHP/TQ, beat his best SC's pull on premium and perf setting.

So far, my HO cams, which were $53 each when I bought and installed them myself, is by far the best bang for the buck.

Auto 4.7 trucks dyno 15 to 20 hp less at the wheels than 4.7 stick trucks, bone stock. They need cams or Superchips just to do what a stick truck does stock. The Superchips also makes a greater difference on an auto 4.7 truck because it effects shifting, not just power. You don't realize those gains or "feel" that difference on a stick truck.

EXACTLY what Billy said.

Removing that short "DEAD" pause on shifts with the auto was nice. Yet it shifts like stock on the part throttle.

I don't know why ppl try to talk me into ALSO doing the mechanical shift kit to my tranny. It already shifts hard enough to break loose and move sideways sometimes. ESPECIALLY dangerous on shifting during a hard throttle left turn. Why would you want it to shift any harder IF that is possible?
Anyway. The guys with the stick don't get to see the benefit of the SC as far as shifting. They already have something that shifts how and when they like anyway! :P

So the VALUE of the SC programmer is more for a auto 4.7 than for a non auto 4.7

Thanks for the input, guys. The old hot rodding theme of finding the best horsepower-to-cost ratio may leave the Superchips at the bottom of the list of "gotta have it" for us 4.7 rowers. Horsepower is still a drug, however...I may still go for it someday! :)

'stick truck', my Dak isn't made of sticks...

OH, you mean a manual tranny, oh.

Whether auto or manual, what's at the rear wheels, is where it's at!

Hey Graphite, do you have LSD rear?

Even on the manual, the SC's tuner, DOES take the 117mph speed limiter off.

It DOES allow you to change the speedo back to stock for tire size changes, etc.

8 peak HP is a relative thing. YOu ever ridden an 8 HP go cart?

Yeah, Todd, a go-cart has pretty good power-to-weight ratio LOL. My brother had a '57 VW with 36HP that had the reverse effect! I'm running out of options for performance mods on a high mileage / street driven Dak, so the Superchips is the most likely next mod. Ya think Duner would market his turbo setup? 12.4 sec. 1/4 mile in a CC would be a hoot! :)

3 pulls on the Dynojet in 4th gear, 1 pull in 3rd gear. Best numbers came with second pull in 4th gear. The speedo limiter kicked in at 5500 rpm in fourth @ 112 mph speedo. The third gear pull, the rev limiter kicked in at 6200 rpm. Not bad for an old horse, eh? Curiously, within 1 HP and 1 TQ of FLDak at the start of this post.

Todd, yeah I have the Auburn LSD. With the 4.56's he he he :)

The Auburn is kinda noisy when I make sharp turns in parking lots though. It seems to grab pretty hard for just a set of spiders with springs wedged in between! Burns both tires pretty good.

01Motorsport, you need to get rid of that limiter!
The Superchips was worth more to me for the auto shift improvement and the speed and rev limit increase more so than any HP I could feel with the butt dyno. :p

I guess I've never noticed the rev limiter in "normal use" since the 4.7's peak HP is below 5000 rpm. Old school 'valve float' is in the back of my mind. I must say that hitting the rev or speed limiter, even on the dyno, is an uncomfortable feeling.

01 motorsport,

So you have a RC, thats the single drive shaft, less loss than mine, and by 5 speed, you do mean the manual tranny, right?

You even have an upgraded Y pipe I don't have.

Get rid of the fan clutch, that'll be about 3-5.

My NON Super chips, was 218rwhp, 292rwtq

I've got about 116,000 miles on my DAK

I tried running with the clutch fan removed for about two months, but the temp guage would run in the center after being in stop-n-go traffic. The OEM clutch was starting to wobble, so I got an Imperial version. The Imperial weighs about 25% less. I drilled a 1" and three 1/2" holes in each fan blade to save a little rotating weight. I've got a Derale electric fan and adjustable thermostat that I hope to use for a pusher below the bumper, someday. Has anyone ever tapped in an adjustable thermostat on the OEM electric to make it below 210 degrees? Does this affect the A/C or throw a code?
