Subject: Rotten egg smell: 2000 4.7

Message:
Hi,

I have a bad rotten egg smell from my 2000 CC 4.7, 5spd. It is still under warranty (just!) and the dealer has been unable to do anything about it. They now say that there is nothing wrong (no code) and that the smell is normal. I say bull! There is no way a smell that bad can be normal. I drove the truck home from the dealer and my wife could smell it in the street 30 seconds after I pulled in the garage!

I have read a few posts on the board but couldn't find any definitive solutions. Anyone else had this problem and solved it?

other details: seems to be worse when cold start (ie: open loop mode) but will still do it warmed up, but not as bad. RPMs are slow to drop to idle or when shifting, will not 'hold back' going downhill most of the time. Dealer did a PCM flash as per some TSB, but it made no difference to the smell and now the truck has no bottom end torque and pings going uphill on hot days.

Thanks for any input,

Ian

Your dealer gave you the "death" flash. They retarded your timing. You've lost pretty much every bit of power you had. I'd send my PCM to Mike Leach and have him reflash it if I were you. You can find his number in some older posts. Just do a search. As for the rotten egg smell...could be your cat converter or muffler? Just a hunch.

I had the same thing happen when I burned out the
clutch on my 99 wrangler. When the clutch was about to
die it smelled like rotten eggs.. Something to do with
sulfur in the clutch pads, I was told. probably the clutch,
that wouldnt show up on the PCM.

It is NOT the clutch. No slippage. Only 35000 miles. Minimal towing.

Re: "Death" flash. Is there any way to get the original code back?

It has been suggested by my friends that the cat may be partially plugged. Is there an official (ie: warranty) way to tell? Obviously it is not so bad that the PCM is picking up on it.

How old are your spark plugs? An engine out of tune will make the catalytic converter smell like rotten eggs. Find the source of the problem before you ruin the converter. A bottle of injector cleaner in the tank may help.

I replaced the plugs 1000 miles ago (approx.) at the appropriate service interval. The factory Champions were badly worn and maybe a touch dark (running rich). I replaced them with NGK Platinums. The problem was there before and after the plug swap with no changes. I pulled a couple of the plugs the other day because the dealer said that I had probably bought the wrong heat range. (I figured he was full of s***, one has to be a long way out AND usually the vehicle runs poorly to boot). The plugs are running much cleaner than the Champions. A very light tan colour.

I am not the original owner of the vehicle. It was traded to the Dodge dealer I bought it from. I believe the problem was happening even then, which is a year ago. This leads me to the conclusion that the cat may have suffered damage, but not enough for the PCM to pick up on it yet.

To Cris: re coolant - Burning coolant smells sweet and is usually seen in the exhaust as white 'smoke' even after the pipes heat up. Also one runs low on coolant, which my truck never has.

DakStPete is exactly right. It is your catalytic converter. The reason is it smelling is because you are burning your cat. Stop flooring it everywhere. The reason i know this is... my bro has a 1993 5.2 and his cat was burnt bad cause he floored it all the time... he went and installed another one, and the smell went away... go to an exhast place and ask them to check ur cat.

Paul...

P.S.- if thats not it, i have no idea what it could be.

the catylitic converter has collpased internally -- get a new one afer getting that tested -- also check on a vacuum leak to see if it was running lean and that overheated the cat -- the cat will have a long term warrenty as far as the part goes

OK, here's the deal: How do I get my dealer to replace any of this stuff under warranty? He's seen the vehicle 3 times recently and claims there is nothing wrong!

Personally I'd like him to replace the front O2 sensor, the TPS and the cat. But until it starts throwing codes I doubt he will do anything.

Suggestions?

Thx,
Ian

Try another dealer if you can. That smell is typically related to pollution controls. I don't think there is any reason for someone to tell you you got the death flash without knowing the flash code.

Re: another dealer.

I'd love to...but...it is a least 1hr 15 minutes away. I'd have to drop it off one week and pick it up the next. I'd really rather not have it sitting on the lot waiting to be broken in to. I may end up having to do this, because I doubt going into my local dealing and throwing a fit will do much good. If anyone has any tips about how to encourage my local dealer to see things my way I'd like to hear them.

Thx, Ian

Climb under it and bang on it with a block of wood if it rattles then it is bad.You then need to replace not only the cat but the muffler also.Have an exhaust shop look at it and let them determine that it is bad if it is then get it in writing from them and take it to the dealer. At this point if the dealer still won't replace it then write a nasty letter to dodge and explain to them the problems you are having with the dealer. If dodge does nothing then buy an after market cat and replace it.Summit racing has them for about 80 bucks.

I agree that most likely the cats are going bad. The cats are under the emmissions warranty ( 80 000 miles). I would go find another dealer. If you are in California a small threat of calling the CARB will get their a$$in gear. there is no reason for them not to fix it because its a warrnaty item so the Dodge corp. is paying for it not the dealer. speak to the service manager. or general manager.
