I have a 1999 Dakota Ext. Cab with the 318. I want to put in a new Mopar Performance 360/380hp or 402/435hp Crate Engine and have noticed that the dealers say "No or Not Recommended for MPI installations or A/C." What does MPI stand for and just because it says not recommended for A/C, can A/C still be used? And, can the 402 fit in the engine compartment?

MPI = Multi Point Injection, a form a fuel injection. What they are saying is that they recommend a carburetor instead. Those particular crate motors have high-lift cams, and are approaching race-engine characteristics, so idle quality to support an system like air conditioning would be difficult. That's not to say it couldn't be done, just tough and irritating.

The intake manifold would have to be replaced with one made for MPI otherwise your injectors would have nowhere to go. I also think that the A/C compressor would need to be modified in order to make it fit on the crate engine.

The 402 is the same size engine with a stroker crank.

Mopar Performance offers a 360 MPI long block crate motor. It has the Magnum RT cam, HD springs, single plane MPI intake, roller rockers, RT heads, hi-vol. oil pump. This unit works with '93 and um 5.9 Magnum setups (INCLUDING Air Conditioning). How ya like dem apples?
