Speculation is with a 4.7 HO or 5.7 Hemi. Don't hold your breath, though. If you pay attention to the way Chrysler has always done things, they introduce a new vehicle with a marginal horsepower engine, sell some vehicles, and then hope that those owners will trade those in when the real power comes around. A few examples. The much-ballyhood Dodge Caravan was introduced in 1984 with two 4-cyl. engines: 2.2 and 2.6; 3.0 v-6 (Mitsubishi dog) about 2 years later. The original Dodge Dakota came out with 2.5 4-cyl and 3.9 6-cyl in 1987. The first v-8 (not counting Shelbys) in 1991. The 1997 Dak was a new design (current GenIII), but the R/T came out in '98. The current Ram had to wait on the Hemi. There you go. Unless they break this trend, my guess is that the 2005 Dak will be status quo, engine wise, maybe the HO, and the Hemi in 2006. Like a kid waiting for Santa Claus.

With the power to weight ratio of the 4.7 Dak, And the tru-trac diff... Chevy can bring it on with the big block. I'll happily kick it around anytime. I had a little light to light the other day with one of those Pontiac GTP's, I consistantly killed it. Talk about being embarassed by a 4X4 !!! My truck gladly hits 5500 RPM whenever I ask it to, And believe me,I do.

The old Chrysler Corporation sold the original 440 tooling in 1978. The engines you see in the performance catalogs are used under license (originally I believe Keith Black supplied the Big Blocks to Chrysler's crate motor program).

DaimlerChrysler AG would have to buy back the tooling for the 440 and knowing DaimlerChrysler AG, they would rather kill off old Chrysler technology before admitting that they were any good.

Then again it is rumoured that when Juergen Shrempp retires in 2005/2006 that DaimlerChrysler AG may sell off the Chrysler Group and there is a good chance that the company will be American again.
